FORT MYERS, FL - Jeff Lynch went 3-for-3 with a season-high three RBIs and Adam Weiner totaled four singles to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 6-5 victory over Wisconsin-Oshkosh Friday afternoon at Pigott Memorial Field. The Blue Jays improved to 13-2 on the season, while Oshkosh fell to 9-1.
A sixth run for Hopkins in the seventh inning turned out to be the difference in the contest, as Weiner got on base with his fourth single and Colin McCarthy advanced him to third with a single up the middle. Lynch then delivered with his third RBI on a single to right field to score Weiner.
Hopkins jumped on the Titans in the first inning with consecutive doubles by McCarthy and Lynch. McCarthy hit a deep opposite field double to right field, and Lynch followed by crushing a pitch to the left center warning track to put the Jays ahead, 1-0.
The Jays added another run in the fourth as Lynch proceeded around the bases with a walk and stolen base. Lynch advanced to third on an infield single by Chris Wilhelm, before Richie Carbone knocked the first basemen home with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Oshkosh fired back in the fifth inning when Luke Gajewski worked a leadoff walk with a 13-pitch at-bat. The center fielder moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Neil Hebert, and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Doug Beattie.
The top of the inning continued as Michael Polcyn knocked in Beattie with a single through the left hand side, and Michael Swift smashed a triple to left center to give the Titans a 3-2 lead.
The Titans' lead did not last long, however, as freshman JR Charles got things going with a leadoff single to third base. Weiner then collected his third hit of the game with an RBI single to right field to knock home Charles from second and square the game, 3-3.
McCarthy led off the sixth inning for the Jays with a walk, and Lynch promptly belted a deep double to the right center warning track to give Hopkins a 4-3 lead. After Lynch advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wilhelm, Matt Ricci knocked in Lynch with a high infield pop fly that was lost in the sun by the Titan infield.
Oshkosh was able to battle back for a run in the eighth as it took advantage of a pair of Hopkins blunders. The leadoff hitter Bobby Kachel reached base after being hit by a pitch and the Titans made the Jays pay for an infield two-out error when Hebert knocked an RBI single up the middle. That was followed by a single through the right side by Beattie to bring the Titan within one run, 6-5.
McCarthy went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs for the Jays, as Carter Burns gave up three runs in five innings of work. Beattie was 2-for-5 with two RBIs for the Titans.
Hopkins plays its final game in Florida tomorrow at 9:00 am as it squares off against Wooster for the second time this season.
