ATLANTA, GA - Host and fourth-ranked Emory defeated top-ranked Johns Hopkins, 6-3, in the finale of the Fab 7 Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays drop their second in a row to a top-four team and are now 4-2 on the season. The Eagles improve to 8-3 with their second straight win and six in the last seven matches.
Jordan Wylie and Madison Gordon put Emory on top early with an 8-4 win at second doubles over sophomore Shannon Herndon and freshman Sydney Lehman. But Junior Abby Clark and sophomore Stephanie Rettig answered with a 9-7 win over Brenna Kelly and Emma Taylor at third. Gabrielle Clark and Annette Sullivan closed out doubles and gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead with an 8-6 defeat of junior Hailey Hogan and sophomore Elaine Baik at first.
Gabrielle Clark, last year's NCAA Singles Champion, pushed Emory's lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 over Hogan at first. Marissa Levine won at second, beating Baik 7-6 (2), 6-4. Beatrice Rosen earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at third over Herndon. Lehman won at fourth for Hopkins, topping Wylie 7-5, 6-3. Rettig also won at sixth, defeating Kelly 6-3, 6-2. Gordon took the final point for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-3 win at fifth over Abby Clark.
Hopkins will be back on the court on Wednesday, March 27 as the Blue Jays open their Centennial Conference slate at Dickinson. The match versus the Red Devils is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
