March 31, 2013

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - In a rematch of the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the outcome was the same as Johns Hopkins nipped Carnegie Mellon, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon. The fourth-ranked Blue Jays improve to 7-2 on the season while the seventh-ranked Tartans slip to 8-4.

Just like their meeting four weeks ago, the Tartans took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at first and second. And just like last time, the Blue Jays battled back by winning four of six singles matches to win the match. Chelsea Motie and Bryn Raschke took an 8-0 win at first over sophomore Elaine Baik and junior Hailey Hogan. At second, Angela Pratt and Alexandra Tapak beat sophomore Shannon Herndon and freshman Sydney Lehman, 8-2. Junior Abby Clark and sophomore Stephanie Rettig earned a point for the Blue Jays as they beat Brook Tsu and Lydia Utkin, 8-6, at third.

In singles, Motie defeated Hogan at first by a 6-3, 6-0 score. Baik meanwhile won at second, beating Elizabeth Martin 6-4, 6-4. Pratt also won by a 6-3, 6-0 score, defeating Herndon at third. Hopkins would earn wins at fourth through sixth to take the win. Lehman dropped just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win at fourth over Tsu. Rettig, who had clinched the win for Hopkins in the last meeting against Abbey Hamstra, once again beat Hamstra in straight sets. This time the two squared off at fifth singles, but the outcome was the same as Rettig won 6-1, 6-2. Clark would clinch the win for the Jays as she grinded out a three-set win. Clark took the first set, 6-4, over Raschke but the Tartan took the second 6-3. Clark responded with a 6-2 win the third to take the win for Hopkins.

Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday, April 3 as the Blue Jays host the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Centennial Conference match is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start.
