NAPERVILLE, IL -- Senior Annie Monagle placed third in the mile run, while the distance medley relay team placed sixth to lead the Johns Hopkins women's track & field team to a 21st place overall finish at the Division III Indoor Track National Championships Saturday.
Monagle stormed down the backstretch to record a Hopkins record time of 4:49.64, earning her second career All-America honor. The senior previously earned AA honors this fall in cross country. Monagle is the first Blue Jay to place in the top-8 in the event since Laura Paulsen in 2009. Christy Cazzola of Wisconisin-Oshkosh won the event in a time of 4:48.11.
Friday night, the Blue Jay women compiled a Centennial Conference record time of 11:40.86 in the distance medley relay to place sixth overall amidst an incredibly deep field. The time would have placed first overall in any other season except for 2007, according to NCAA.com.
Sophomore Ingrid Johnson opened the relay with a strong 3:38 1200m leg, which was followed by a 58.5 400m by freshman Megan McDonald. Maggie Shelton then ran a 2:14 800m, and Monagle anchored with a phenomenal 4:49 in the mile. Shelton originally traveled as an alternate, but filled in for Hannah Oneda due to illness.
The freshman Oneda was seeded second in the 5000-meter run, but managed to finish 10th overall in a time of 17:28.17 despite illness. Cazzola won the race with a time of 16:57.58.
Competing in the triple jump, freshman Imoni McCorvey placed 13th overall with a jump of 10.96m. Melissa Norville of Illinois College took first with a mark of 12.50m.
Hopkins will take a three-week break from competition before returning to action outdoors at the Stanford and Maryland Invitationals on March 29-30.
