BALTIMORE, MD -- Junior Andrew Carey broke a 31-year-old program record in the 1500m to guide the Johns Hopkins men's track & field team to a second place finish at the Hopkins-Loyola Invitational Saturday.
Carey's win in the 1500m joined the Hopkins 1600m sprint medley relay team as the lone victors on the day for the Jays, who totaled 138 points to place second behind Salisbury (216). Howard Community College was third with 111 points.
The junior Carey finished just ahead of Ryan Witters of the Georgetown Running Company in 3:56.07. The 1500m program record was previously held by John Roemer IV, who ran a time of 3:56.20 in 1982. Max Robinson placed third with a personal record time of 3:58.65, while Julian Saliani was fifth in 3:59.30.
The 1600m sprint medley team of Justin Grant, Bryan Ricciardi, Sam Gottuso and Ryan Alvarez won the event over York (PA) by three seconds in 3:42.49.
Junior Alex Jebb had a strong day in the jumping pits, placing second and third in the long jump and triple jump, respectively. Jebb's long jump of 6.70m was just short of Robert Wiggs of Wesley (6.73), as he posted a mark of 13.26m in the triple. Alexander Naticchia placed fourth in the long jump for the Jays.
Elsewhere in field events, Ryan Walsh tied for third with a season-best height of 1.95m in the high jump, while Paul Vozzo placed third in the pole vault by clearing 4.10m.
On the track, Naticchia placed fifth overall with a season-best time of 22.73 in the 200m, and Trevor Holmgren ran 1:56.95 in the 800m to place fifth, as well.
Hopkins returns to the track next weekend as it travels to Widener University in Chester, PA.
