BALTIMORE, MD -- Trevor Holmgren set the program freshman record in the 800m and Ryan Walsh and Brendan Evans won their respective events to lead the Johns Hopkins men's track & field team over the weekend. The team competed at various meets, including the Larry Ellis Invitational, Widener Invitational and Mount Multis Meet.
A pair of the best performances on the weekend came in the 800m run at the Widener Invitational, as Andrew Carey placed sixth overall in 1:54.45 and Holmgren finished 10th in 1:55.62. Holmgren's time broke the Hopkins freshman record, which was previously set by Nate Sotuyo in 2007 (1:56.46).
Walsh tied his season-best mark of 1.95m to take first overall in the high jump and defeat Temple's Kevin Caporiccio by a tenth of a meter. Alex Jebb finished ninth in the event with a jump of 1.65m.
Also winning for the Blue Jays was junior Brendan Evans, who leapt 6.47m on his final attempt to tie Carlton Stafford of Temple for the top spot. The mark is a season-best in 2013 for Evans.
Elsewhere, Kevin Keenahan set an outdoor career-best with a mark of 4.05m in the pole vault for fourth overall, while Julian Saliani ran a season-best 3:59.29 in the 1500m.
Sophomore Michael Spadaro led Hopkins in the grueling 10-event decathlon at the Mount Multis Meet hosted by Mount St. Mary's University Friday and Saturday.
Spadaro totaled 5489 points to improve his career-best and place third overall, achieving strong marks in the shot put, discus and javelin in windy conditions. Freshman Devin Conley was sixth with 4595 points in his first-ever decathlon, while junior Nick Tyson placed seventh with 4494 points.
