SWARTHMORE, PA - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team shut out host Swarthmore, 9-0, in a meeting of undefeated Centennial Conference teams on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays complete their seventh straight undefeated conference record and clinch the top seed in next weekend's CC Tournament. Hopkins (16-2, 10-0 CC) has now won 70 straight Centennial Conference regular season matches. The Garnet (12-3, 8-1) have their eight-match win streak snapped in the loss and earned the number two seed in the tournament.
Sophomore Shannon Herndon and sophomore Hailey Hogan won 8-2 at first doubles over Lia Carlson and Emily Rosenblum. Junior Abby Clark and sophomore Stephanie Rettig won by the same score at second as they defeated Katie Samuelson and Brooke Wilkins. At third doubles, sophomore Elaine Baik and freshman Olivia Kasten were 8-3 winners over Epiphany English and Stephanie Chia.
Baik took her first set, 7-5, over Carlson and was leading 5-2 in the second with Carlson was forced to retire. Hogan earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at second over Rosenblum. At third, Herndon defeated Kelsey Johnson 6-0, 6-1 while Rettig won 6-1, 6-0 over Chia at fourth. Clark won by the same score at fifth, beating Samuelson, and sophomore Shannon Libaw also won 6-1, 6-0 over Gayatri Iyengar at sixth.
Hopkins earned the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. Hopkins will face the winner of the Haverford-Washington College first round match in the semifinals Saturday. Haverford and Washington College will square off on Wednesday, May 1 at Haverford. The Blue Jays have won six straight Centennial Conference Tournament Titles and are 12-1 all-time in the tournament.
