DURHAM, NC - Junior Max Robinson broke a 36-year-old program record in the 5000-meter run to guide the Johns Hopkins track & field team at the Duke Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The 5000m runners finished the night in remarkable fashion, led by Max Robinson's time of 14:33.23. The time broke the second-oldest record in program history, which had been held by Jim Kennedy since 1977. Kennedy ran a converted time of 14:45.00.
Additionally, freshman Schaffer Ochstein broke the freshman record with a time of 14:51, while senior Josh Baker also broke 15 minutes in 14:53.
"We've now had five athletes break 15 minutes for the 5000m in my 13 years coaching here, and to have three of them do it on one night is amazing," said head coach Bobby Van Allen. "I'm so proud of these guys for putting in so much work every day. It's a nice feeling to see them reap the rewards."
Junior Andrew Carey ran 1:53.78 in the highly anticipated 800m. Carey's season-best time was good for 13th overall and currently ranks among the top-10 in the nation. Steve Hyland and James Frick ran 1:57 and 1:58, respectively, to display the depth of the Jays in the event.
The men's 1500m saw Frick take one step closer to breaking John Roemer's ('82) school record, as he finished in 3:58. Teammate Wes Butler dropped five seconds from his performance at the Maryland Invitational last weekend, running 4:02.
Junior Collin Rozanski broke 50 seconds in the 400m for the first time since last season's Centennial Conference Championship, running a personal record time of 49.66.
Both Hopkins 3000m steeplechase men ran personal best times, with Josh Budman running 9:33.02 to win his section. Andrew Ceruzzi was not far behind in 9:47.
Meanwhile, triple jumpers Michael Spadaro and Brendan Evans had huge days taking 10th and 11th overall. The pair each leaped over 44', with Spadaro posting 13.46m and Evans earning a mark of 13.44.
