BALTIMORE, MD - In a match-up of two Centennial Conference unbeatens, fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins beat Haverford, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Fords fall to 8-3 and 4-1 in the conference.
Hopkins took two of three doubles matches to head into singles play with a 2-1 lead. Sophomores Elaine Baik and Shannon Herndon dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara at first doubles. Senior Andrea Berlinghof and freshman Olivia Kasten were 8-4 winners at second over Robyn Himelstein and Celia Tong. Junior Lauren Fields and freshman Kara McDonough defeated Kristen Anderson and Rachel Torg, 8-4, at third.
In singles play, Gallagher picked up the Fords' second point of the match with a three-set win at first over Herndon. Gallagher rallied to win 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8). Hopkins would sweep the other five matches in straight sets. Junior Abby Clark defeated Ferrara 6-3, 6-2 at second. Berlinghof won 6-3, 6-1 at third over Himelstein. At fourth, senior Ariel Several beat Tong 6-2, 6-1. Kasten meanwhile was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Anderson at fifth. McDonough did not lose a game in her win at sixth as she defeated Torg 6-0, 6-0.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 13 as the team travels to the Eastern Shore to take on Washington College. The meeting with the Shorewomen is set to start at 11:00 am.
