BALTIMORE, MD -- York College (PA) hit a pair of home runs and totaled 15 hits to defeat the No. 6 Johns Hopkins baseball team, 10-3, Wednesday afternoon at the JHU Baseball Diamond.
With the Centennial Conference playoffs looming on Friday, Hopkins (33-6) featured 12 pitchers in the contest in an effort to keep its bullpen fresh.
York (21-20) jumped on the Blue Jays in the second inning when Drew Frankenfield hit an opposite field home run just over the right field fence. The Spartans then opened a 4-0 lead in the third after Dustin Worthman scored Andrew Hershey from second. Colbe Herr followed with a line-drive two-run homer to left field.
The Blue Jays were able to manufacture a run in the fourth as senior Jeff Lynch drew a leadoff walk. Mike Denlinger reached base on an error, and both runners advanced after a flyout by Craig Hoelzer. Josh Kohn then fired a wild pitch that struck out Mike Kanen but trickled into the Hopkins dugout, allowing Lynch to score.
Hopkins cut its deficit to one, 4-3, as Christopher Casey and Colin McCarthy opened the seventh by switching places at second with a pair of doubles. Lynch then knocked in McCarthy with his career-high 46th RBI of the season.
The Jays' rally ceased in the latter portion of the game, however, as the Spartans exploded for two runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth. A large portion of the damage came at the bat of Nic Long, who hit a two-run single to give York a 9-3 lead.
Kohn allowed zero earned runs in five innings of work for York, while his teammate Frankenfield was 3-for-5 with three runs and a pair of RBIs. McCarthy led the Jays with a pair of hits and an RBI.
Hopkins returns to action Friday as it hosts Franklin & Marshall at 3:30 pm on the JHU Baseball Diamond for the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs.
