Kalamazoo Bound! Hopkins Defeats Carnegie Mellon in Sweet 16

PITTSBURGH, PA - The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team defeated host and eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 5-0, in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 20-2 on the season as they reach the 20-win plateau for the first time in program history. Hopkins advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second straight season as it defeats CMU (14-8) for the third time this season.

Sophomores Shannon Herndon and Stephanie Rettig gave the Blue Jays their first point of the match with an 8-3 win at second doubles over Bryn Maschke and Brooke Tsu, the eighth-ranked doubles pair in the region. Junior Hailey Hogan and freshman Sydney Lehman pushed the Blue Jays' lead to two as the pair beat the fourth-ranked doubles pair, Katie Cecil and Angela Pratt, by an 8-5 score at first. Sophomore Elaine Baik and junior Abby Clark closed out doubles play and gave Hopkins a 3-0 lead in the match as they defeated Lydia Utkin and Alexandra Tapak, 8-6, at third.

Lehman was once again the first one of the court in singles as she defeated Tsu 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles to push the Blue Jays one point closer to the quarterfinals. Rettig then punched the Blue Jays' ticket to the quarterfinals as she beat Abbey Hamstra 6-4, 6-2 at fifth singles.

Hopkins will travel to Kalamazoo, MI for the NCAA Quarterfinals and will take on the winner of the Williams-Tufts match. Williams is currently ranked third in the nation while Tufts is ranked 18th. The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20 at 8:30 am at Stowe Stadium.
