BALTIMORE, MD - Fifth-ranked Ursinus scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart as the Bears beat host Johns Hopkins, 2-0, in Centennial Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays slip to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference while the Bears win their eighth straight to improve to 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the CC.
Ursinus came into the game ranked third in the NCAA in scoring with nearly six goals per game but was held to just two by the Hopkins' defense. It is the fewest goals scored by the Bears since a 2-1 loss at Elizabethtown on September 10.
It took Ursinus 27 minutes to get on the board and when it did, it scored a pair of quick goals to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Danielle Stong inserted a corner, one of 21 for the Bears, sending the ball to the top of the circle and Kesley Reed. Reed collected the pass and dribbled to her right before firing a hard shot on the Blue Jays' cage. Amber Steigerwalt tipped the shot past junior Zoey Atabek to put Ursinus ahead. Just one minute and 50 seconds later, Ursinus had a two-goal lead. Megan Keenan collected a pass just outside the circle, dribbled in and beat a defender before blasting a shot past Atabek and into the center of the goal.
Atabek finished the game with 16 saves, one shy of her career high, and her fifth double-digit save game this season. In addition, senior co-captain Danielle Thompson made a pair of defensive saves. The Bears' Danielle DeSpirito finished with one save in earning the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, October 17 as the Blue Jays host the Haverford Fords. The Centennial Conference tilt is slated for a 7:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
