BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference dual meets against nationally-ranked opponents on Saturday afternoon at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays slipped past 29th-ranked Stevens, 21-19, before falling, 24-6, to 20th-ranked Ursinus. Ursinus opened the tri-match with a 36-5 victory against the Ducks and improves to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial with the sweep. Johns Hopkins is now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the CC, while Stevens falls to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in league action.
The featured match of the day came in the 125-pound weight class as Johns Hopkins' third-ranked Paul Bewak took on top-ranked and previously undefeated Chris Donaldson of Ursinus. Neither managed a point in the three-minute first period, but Bewak grabbed a 1-0 lead as he scored an escape after working from the bottom in the second period. Donaldson took bottom to open the third period and eventually worked a reversal to take a 2-1 lead that looked like it might hold. However, after two stalemates and restarts, Bewak scored a reversal of his own with less than 15 seconds remaining and rode out the final 10 seconds to secure the win and stake JHU to an early 3-0 lead.
Johns Hopkins senior Ray Yagloski followed with a 4-1 win over Keven Hoogheem to make it 6-0, but the Bears took eight straight wins by decision to secure the 24-6 victory. Among the eight wins were one-point decisions at 157, 184 and 285.
Two of those 3-2 wins for the Bears came in rematches from tight finishes in the 2013 Centennial Conference titles matches. At 157, Ursinus junior Richard Jasinski topped Christian Salera, 3-2; he topped Salera 5-4 in the conference tournament a year ago. At 184, Johns Hopkins' sophomore Kyle Spangler fell to 10th-ranked Daniel Manganaro, 3-2, in overtime after falling in last season's title bout to Manganaro in overtime as well (3-1).
Against Stevens, the Blue Jays jumped out to an 18-3 lead on the strength of a technical fall by Bewak, a major by Yagloski, a pin by senior Duncan Crystal and a decision from Salera before the Ducks made their move with a major, a pin and a decision in the 165, 174 and 184 matches.
With the match riding in the balance, Johns Hopkins junior Evan Johnson scored a takedown in overtime to edge Mark Garrity at 197 to push the Blue Jays' lead to 21-16 before Chris Florek scored an 11-4 victory for the Ducks at 285 to account for the 21-19 final score.
Bewak's two victories on the day improve his season record to 26-1 on the year and 90-16 in his career. He is just the third wrestler in school history to reach the 90-win mark and he is now just eight victories shy of matching Eric Fishel's school record for wins.
