Johns Hopkins Tops McDaniel, 24-18, in Centennial Wrestling Action

Feb. 12, 2014

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team won four of the first five bouts and held off a late rally by visiting McDaniel to claim a 24-18 victory against the Green Terror in Goldfarb Gymnasium Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 10-5 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Green Terror slip to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in the Centennial. The seven Centennial Conference wins for Johns Hopkins this season are a school record.

The Blue Jays took control with three straight wins at 141, 149 and 157. Senior Henry Stauber, who is currently ranked eighth in the nation, jump-started the spree as he allowed an early takedown before scoring 19 straight points to win by technical fall over Alvontae Drummond, 19-2. Senior Duncan Crystal followed with a tough 7-4 win over Mason Goretsas and junior Christian Salera added a 13-4 major decision win against Erik Meyer to stake the Blue Jays to an 18-3 lead.

McDaniel got one back at 165 when Luke Yox scored a late reversal to edge Alex McLaughlin, 2-1, but Johns Hopkins freshman Jared Forman followed with an 87-second pin of Ricky Tisinger to give the Blue Jays what proved to be an insurmountable 24-6 lead. Tisinger scored an early takedown and two near fall points, but Forman worked a reversal and, after allowing an escape, threw a tight headlock that Tisinger couldn't break.

The Green Terror won the last three bouts to account for the final scoring. A pair of decisions at 184 and 197 and a first period pin by Taylor Avino closed the 24-6 deficit to the 24-18 final.

The featured match of the night came at 133 with ninth-ranked Ryan O'Boyle using a pair of first-period takedowns to fuel a 5-2 win against Johns Hopkins senior Ray Yagloski. The Blue Jays had opened the match with junior Paul Bewak winning by forfeit at 125.

The win, the Blue Jays' fourth straight in the series and seventh in the last nine meetings with the Green Terror, closes the regular season for Johns Hopkins, which will next be in action on Saturday, February 22 at the Centennial Conference Championships.
