Fourth-Ranked Johns Hopkins Moves onto NCAA Quarterfinals

May 10, 2014

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team found itself in unfamiliar territory on Saturday afternoon, but by the end of the match the Blue Jays were victorious. Hopkins rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat host and 21st-ranked Mary Washington in the NCAA Sweet 16. Hopkins improves to 23-1 and advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third straight year. Mary Washington finishes its season at 18-8.

The Eagles jumped on top of the Blue Jays with wins at first and third doubles but the Blue Jays won four of six singles matches to grab the win. Lindsay Raulston and Shelby Harris took the first point of the match with an 8-6 win at first over senior Hailey Hogan and sophomore Sydney Lehman. Junior Elaine Baik and freshman Mikey Barthelmass earned an 8-4 win over Alina Suyama and Alex Ritter at second. But an 8-3 win for Ashley Barrow and Mackenzie Smith at third over freshmen Ashnaa Rao and Amanda Austi, gave Mary Washington a 2-1 lead.

Baik lost just one game in her win at fifth singles as she beat Christina Gaul to tie the match at two. Freshman Jody Law put Hopkins on top with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Berri Flood at sixth. Rao turned the same trick as Baik, beating Smith 6-0, 6-1 at third to push the Blue Jays one point closer to the quarterfinals. Hogan, the Blue Jay captain, did the honors - just as she had done in the Centennial Conference title match. She beat Ritter 6-2, 6-4 at fourth to clinch the win and the berth in the quarterfinals. The win was also the 110th total win (singles & doubles) for Hogan, moving her into fourth in school history.

Hopkins will travel to Claremont, CA for the NCAA Quarterfinals. Hopkins will face the winner of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer on Monday, May 19.
