BALTIMORE, MD - Fourth-ranked and top-seeded Johns Hopkins beat fourth-seeded Swarthmore, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament Saturday. The Blue Jays improve to 20-1 on the season, tying the program record for wins in a season, and advance to the CC title match for the eighth straight season. The Garnet end their season at 9-10.
In a battle of top 10 doubles teams in the ITA Atlantic South at first doubles, it was Hopkins' Hailey Hogan and Sydney Lehman that came on top to give Hopkins an early 1-0 lead. The Blue Jay duo, ranked sixth in the Atlantic South, beat Lia Carlson and Alli Wong, who are ranked ninth in the region, by an 8-1 score. Junior Elaine Baik and freshman Mikey Barthelmass then beat Brooke Wilkins and Katie Samuelson, 8-2, at second. Juniors Shannon Herndon and Stephanie Rettig closed out doubles play as they beat Gayatri Iyengar and Jackie Lane by the same score at third.
Hogan quickly pushed the Blue Jays' lead in the match to 4-0 as she needed just 12 games to beat Iyengar at fourth singles. It was her 48th career singles win, moving her into a tie with Zeena Abdi for seventh in school history. Herndon then clinched the win and a berth in the championship match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Wilkins at fifth.
Hopkins will host the winner of Franklin & Marshall and Haverford in Sunday's championship match. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am. Fans can follow the action .
