BALTIMORE, MD - Top-seeded and fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins beat third-seeded Haverford, 5-0, to win its eighth straight Centennial Conference title on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their school-record 21st match of the season as they improve to 21-1. Hopkins also earns the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Fords, playing in the CC title match for the first time, fall to 12-5 on the season.
Senior Hailey Hogan and sophomore Sydney Lehman gave Hopkins an early 1-0 lead in the match as they beat Alex Ferrara and Caitlin Gallagher, 8-1, at first doubles. Freshmen Amanda Austi and Ashnaa Rao pushed the lead to 2-0 in the match, as the duo did not drop a game in their win over Jessica Liu and Abby Payson at third. Junior Elaine Baik and freshman Mikey Barthelmass wrapped up doubles play at second with an 8-5 win over Kate Donches and Robyn Himelstein.
Lehman was the first one off the court in singles play, losing just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ferrara at second. Hogan, the Blue Jay captain, then clinched the win for Hopkins with a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth over Donches. After going 2-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles, Hogan was named the first-ever CC Tournament MVP.
Hopkins will learn its NCAA Tournament fate on Monday, May 5. The tournament bracket is to be announced at 7:00 pm on NCAA.com.
