Sept. 1, 2014 Previous Breakdowns: Defensive Line • Linebackers • Defensive Backs
BALTIMORE, MD - In the fourth of a seven-part series breaking down the 2014 Johns Hopkins football team, HopkinsSports.com takes a look at the Blue Jay special teams. While newcomers to the program may make an impact this season, the breakdown includes only returning players.
Who's Back: Head coach Jim Margraff can take comfort in knowing he has one of the top returning place-kickers in the nation in Nick Campbell. He can take further comfort knowing that Campbell is just a sophomore.
Campbell wasted no time making an impact last season as he hit 10-of-11 (.909) field goals and 54-of-55 extra points. Campbell led the nation in field goal percentage and his 10 field goals were just one shy of Alex Lachman's school freshman record of 11 (2007).
Who Else is Back: Nick Campbell wasn't the only freshman who made an impact for the Blue Jays on special teams last season. Sophomore Bradley Munday also returns after serving as the team's primary punt return specialist and one of the top performers on kickoff returns as well. Munday averaged 9.1 yards on 21 punt returns and 21.5 yards on 10 kickoff returns.
While the guys who kick and return kicks tend to get the headlines, the players making the tackles on the special teams also play a key role and JHU allowed just 19.4 yards per kickoff return and 7.6 yards per punt return last season.
Sophomore Jack Campbell led the team with nine special teams tackles as a freshman. In all, 10 different players posted five or more special teams tackles last season and seven of the 10 return. In addition to Campbell, special teams coordinator Mike Toerper also returns Rob Gorman (6 special teams tackles), Garrett Spek (6), Sebastian Edwards (6), Jack Toner (6), Dan Johnson (5) and Curtis Antrum (5).
Replacing Carbone: The one key loss for the Blue Jays on special teams was at punter, where three-year regular Richie Carbone must be replaced after averaging 36.5 yards per attempt last season. Sophomore Matt Auran looked good in the spring and during the opening weeks of training camp and is the heir apparent.
Numbers to Know
.909 - Nick Campbell's field goal percentage last season - the best in the nation.
407 - Combined kickoff and punt return yards for Bradley Munday last season. With a quick first step and elusiveness to match, Munday is a threat every time he touches the ball.
