BALTIMORE, MD - Ninth-ranked TCNJ scored three goals in the game's first 10 minutes en route to a 7-0 win over host Johns Hopkins in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 3-3 on the season while the Lions improve to 5-0.
The Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the game, cashing in on a penalty corner at the 2:49-mark. Lexi Smith took a hard shot off Lindsey Hatch's corner and Erin Healy tipped it at the post for the early score. Victoria Martin then scored a pair of goals in quick succession as the visitors built on their lead. Smith once again got the assist on a corner as Martin redirected her shot at the right post at 8:08. Just 83 seconds later, Danielle Andreula's shot was stopped by freshman Greta Helvie. But Martin bounced on the rebound and banged it home to stake TCNJ to a 3-0 lead.
The Lions added to their lead just before the half as Healy got her second of the game at 30:43. Smith fired another hard shot on the cage and junior Zoey Atabek made the save. But Healy collected the rebound and quickly slid it past Atabek to push the lead to four. Coming out of the half, TCNJ didn't take long to add to its lead as the Lions capitalized on another corner. Smith collected a Hatch corner, dribbled into the circle and blasted a shot inside the near post at 35:53.
Hatch got in on the scoring as she dribbled into the circle and scored at the 50:24-mark. Jaclyn Douglas then closed out the scoring with a penalty stroke goal at 58:21. The Blue Jays made a late push to get on the board, but a pair of saves from Amanda Krause and a defensive save from Smith preserved the shutout.
Helvie finished with five saves in 9:41 of action in the first half and took the loss. Atabek came on in relief and made 13 saves while senior co-captain Danielle Thompson also made a defensive save. Martin and Healy led the Lions with two goals each while Smith had a goal and two assists. Kelly Schlupp got the win without making a save in 55:06 of action. Krause finished with the two saves in relief.
