Nov. 17, 2015 Complete 2015 All-Centennial Conference Football Team
LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins, which claimed a record-tying seventh straight Centennial Conference title and will carry a 10-0 record into the first round of the NCAA Playoffs against Western New England on Saturday, dominated the 2015 All-Centennial Football Team, which was announced today.
The Blue Jays produced the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, placed nine players on the All-Centennial First Team and had a school record 17 players named to team overall. Johns Hopkins' nine first team selections boost the program's total to a league-record 146 since the Centennial was formed in 1983 and this is the seventh straight year that Hopkins has produced at least six first team honorees.
Munday, Corliss Grab Offensive, Defensive Player of the Year Honors
Junior wide receiver Bradley Munday and senior linebacker Keith Corliss earned Centennial Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. This is the third time Johns Hopkins has swept these awards as the JHU previously grabbed both honors in 2009 (Andrew Kase (RB) & Colin Wixted (LB)) and 2012 (Jonathan Rigaud (RB) and Taylor Maciow (LB)).
Munday, a First Team All-Centennial repeat selection, is the seventh Johns Hopkins player and third Blue Jay wide receiver to earn Centennial Offensive Player of the Year honors. He leads the team in receptions (64), receiving yards (835) and touchdown receptions (9), ranks third in all-purpose yards (1,108) and is averaging 31.3 yards per kickoff return this season. Munday has career totals of 162 receptions for 1,993 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Corliss, who also earned First Team All-Centennial honors last season, was one of just three unanimous first team selections this season. He is the seventh Johns Hopkins player to earn CC Defensive Player of the Year honors and the third in the last four years. He counts 59 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 tackles for losses and 2.0 sacks to his credit this season and is Johns Hopkins career active leader in tackles with 222.
A Running Back Sweep
Johns Hopkins had the luxury of returning a pair of running backs this season who had previously earned First Team All-Centennial honors in their career as senior Brandon Cherry took top honors in 2013, while junior Stuart Walters was selected last season. Sharing the load in 2015 didn't impact either of them as both earned First Team All-Centennial honors this season.
Walters leads the team in rushing yards (798), rushing touchdowns (16), all-purpose yards (1,115) and overall touchdowns (19). He also has 11 receptions for 180 yards and three touchdowns and is averaging 29.5 yards per kickoff return.
Cherry ranks second on the team in rushing yards (713), rushing touchdowns (8) and overall touchdowns (11) and ranks third in all-purpose yards (850). He also counts 14 receptions for 137 yards and three touchdowns to his credit.
Johns Hopkins has now produced a First Team All-Centennial running back 10 times since 2003 and Walters and Cherry join Adam Cook (2003-04) and Andrew Kase (2008-09) as Hopkins' only two-time First Team All-CC running backs.
Five Offensive Linemen Honored
Producing the offensive player of the year and two first team all-conference running backs is only possible if the offensive line is doing its job. The Blue Jays up front did and all five starters on the Johns Hopkins offensive line earned All-Centennial honors as they paved the way for a unit that is averaging 45.9 points and 506.2 yards per game. The JHU offense is one of the most balanced in the nation as Hopkins is averaging 238.3 yards per game rushing and 267.9 yards per game passing.
Seniors Colin Egan (guard) and Rowan Cade (tackle) were both repeat selection as First Team All-Centennial performers, while senior Fernando Concepcion (guard) and junior Chantz Anderson (center) grabbed second team honors. Senior Baxter DeBruyn (guard) rounded out Hopkins' first All-Centennial offensive linemen with an honorable mention nod. Egan was the only unanimous first team selection on offense in the league.
This is the just the second time in school history that all five Johns Hopkins offensive linemen earned All-Centennial honors as Hopkins first turned this trick in 2009. This is also the seventh straight year that at least three Blue Jay linemen have earned All-Centennial honors. In addition, this is the fifth straight year that at least two linemen earned first team honors and Anderson's selection marks the 13th time since 1998 that Hopkins has produced an All-Centennial center.
Watts, Toner, Henson Round Out First Team Selections
Joining Corliss on the first team on defense are senior linebacker Brady Watts, junior safety Jack Toner and sophomore defensive lineman Keonte Henson.
Watts is making his second appearance on the first team and is one of the most active players on the Blue Jay defense. He counts 35 tackles, 9.0 tackles for losses, 2.0 sacks, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble to his credit this season. His 9.0 TFLs rank second on the team and his three PBUs are third.
Toner is also a repeat first team selection. He ranks fifth on the team in tackles (42), is tied for the team lead in pass breaks (9), leads the team interceptions (5) and has two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery on the year. After emerging last season as a sophomore, Toner is now regarded as one of the safeties in the nation.
Henson is the only sophomore in the Centennial to earn first team honors on offense or defense this season. He ranks fourth on the team in tackles (49), leads the team in tackles for losses (9.5) and sacks (4.5) and also has two forced fumbles on the year after switching from linebacker to defensive end this season.
Germano, O'Connell Round Out Offensive Honorees
Junior quarterback Jonathan Germano and senior tight end Michael O'Connell round out Johns Hopkins' All-Centennial performers on offense as both grabbed second team honors.
Germano is enjoying one of the great seasons in school history by a quarterback as he is currently 173-of-248 for 2,364 yards with 27 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. He has also rushed for 355 yards and four touchdowns on the year. Germano's 27 touchdown passes are already a school single-season record, while he ranks fifth in the nation pass efficiency (182.99), first in completion percentage (71.2) and 15th in touchdown passes.
From his tight end position, O'Connell has been an instrumental part of a Blue Jay rushing attack that is averaging 238.3 yards per game, 5.2 yards per attempt and has already produced 34 rushing touchdowns on the year. He counts four receptions for 31 yards and one touchdown to his credit, but he is most valuable in leading the way on the edge in the run game.
Three on Second Team Defense
A trio of Johns Hopkins defensive players earned Second Team All-Centennial honors in junior linebacker Jack Campbell, junior defensive back Dan Johnson and sophomore defensive lineman Lance Hammond.
Campbell leads the team in tackles (74) and also counts 4.0 tackles for losses, one sack, two fumble recoveries, one interception, one pass breakup and one forced fumble to his credit. His 74 tackles are a career high and he recently recorded the 150th tackle of his career. His 152 career tackles is the second most among all players on the team.
Johnson has emerged as one of the team's top defensive players after two years as a special teams standout. Working from his spot at strong safety, Johnson has 52 tackles, four interceptions, three tackles for loss, one sack, one pass breakup and one forced fumble on the year. The 52 tackles are more than he had in his first two years combined, while his four INTs rank second on the team.
Hammond emerged as a freshman last year on the interior of the Blue Jays' defensive line and has been steady there again this year. He ranks second among all Johns Hopkins defensive linemen in tackles (31) and also has 3.5 tackles for losses, 1.5 sacks and one pass breakup this season.
Adamo Grabs Sportsmanship Honor
The Centennial Conference added an All-Sportsmanship Team to its all-conference selections several years ago and senior wide receiver Evan Adamo was named to that team this year.
Adamo, who also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this season, has nine receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown on the year.
