FORT MYERS, FL - Starting for the second time this season, junior Carter Burns tossed a complete game, 11 strikeout masterpiece, as he led 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 5-2 win over UW-Stout.
Things got going for the Jays early, as they put a quick deuce on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Brian Lin led off the game with a single to left, and after taking second on a passed ball, was pushed to third thanks to a single by Conor Reynolds. Colin McCarthy followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Lin for the first run of the game.
Reynolds then stole second, putting himself in scoring position. When Craig Hoelzer grounded out, Reynolds advanced to third before scoring on a Chris Casey single to right, putting the Jays up 2-0.
From there on it was a pitchers' duel, as each kept the opposing team off the scoreboard through the fifth inning. In that span, Burns struck out five of the 12 batters he retired, giving him six total in five innings of work.
UW-Stout would finally get on the board in the sixth as Jack Schneider singled to left. Brady Burzynski would follow with a single to left, and both advanced a base on an overthrow into the infield. Charlie Meyer would clear the bases with a triple to deep center, tying the game at two.
Hopkins responded in its half of the inning, as Casey tripled to center, putting himself in easy scoring position. Mike Smith then pushed Casey home with a sac-fly to center, as the Jays took a 3-2 lead.
Burns did his job in the seventh and eighth, combining to strikeout three more while not allowing a runner past second base.
Looking to add some cushion in the eighth, Hoelzer and Casey stroked consecutive singles to right. Smith moved them to second and third with a sac bunt before Raul Shah popped out to right field. With two on and two outs, Jake Rogers stepped in and ripped a single to right field, scoring both runners, and giving Hopkins a 5-2 lead headed into the ninth.
Burns added another strikeout in the ninth, finishing with 11 on the day. The junior from Orlando, FL allowed just five hits and walked three in his complete game outing.
Casey led the way offensively for the Jays, going 4-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. As a team the Jays banged out 13 hits, and struck out just twice.
The Jays will wrap up their Fort Myers excursion with a game tomorrow against UW-Platteville at 9 am.
