BALTIMORE, MD - The top-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team picked up pair of shutout wins on Saturday to improve to 5-1 on the season. Hopkins defeated 20th-ranked Skidmore in Fredericksburg, VA and christened its brand-new facility with a win over conference foe Haverford.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Thoroughbreds with a sweep of doubles. Sophomore Ashnaa Rao and senior Shannon Herndon took an 8-3 win at first over Zoe Valella and Yumi Karlshoej. Junior Sydney Lehman and sophomore Amanda Austi won 8-2 at second over Alexa Goldberg and Michelle Fuca. And at third, sophomore Jody Law and freshman Megumi Chen defeated Alex Smith and Monique Carlson, 8-5, at third.
Rao picked up the win at first singles with a 6-1, 1-0 (retired) win over Valella. Lehman then clinched the win with a defeat of Fuca 6-1, 6-1 at third. Austi dropped just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 over Danielle Giannetti at second. Law won at fourth, beating Erica Meno 6-3, 6-4 while Chen won 6-2, 6-3 over Carlson at fifth. And at sixth, Herndon lost just three games as she beat Caroline Hobbs 6-1, 6-2.
Back in Baltimore, Hopkins opened Centennial Conference play and played its first match on its new courts versus Haverford. The Blue Jays dropped just five games in sweeping the doubles. Freshmen Caroline Greydak and Sunaina Vohra picked up the first point of the match as they beat Jessica Liu and Abby Payson, 8-1, at third. Junior Olivia Kasten and senior Stephanie Rettig followed with an 8-2 win over Caitlin Gallagher and Robyn Himelstein. Sophomore Anna Kankanala and senior Macie Wilkins closed out doubles with an 8-2 win at second over Kristen Anderson and Alyssa Lavin.
Wilkins and Kasten dropped just two games apiece at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Kasten topped Anderson 6-0, 6-2 at sixth and Wilkins defeated Lavin 6-2, 6-0 and fifth to clinch the win. Kankanala beat Liu 6-1, 6-2 at fourth and Greydak won in three sets over Payson 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (7) at third. Vohra won at second, beating Himelsetin 6-2, 6-1 and Rettig won at first with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Gallagher.
Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday, March 25 as the Blue Jays travel to Carlisle, PA to take on the Dickinson Red Devils. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
