Johns Hopkins Splits with Dickinson and Georgetown

BALTIMORE, MD - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday, beating Dickinson but falling to Division I Georgetown. The Blue Jays opened the day and conference play with a 6-3 win over the Red Devils. Hopkins then fell to Georgetown, 5-2, in the nightcap.

Freshmen Justin Kang and David Perez kicked things off with an 8-0 win over Shawn Diniz and Joey Frank at second doubles. Clark Chapman and Steven Kaplan then evened the match with a 9-7 win over junior Edward Corty and sophomore Jeff Mackenzie at first. Evan Davis and Josh Kaseff then gave the Red Devils a 2-1 lead over the Blue Jays as they beat freshmen Jacob Lin and JP Paris, 8-4, at third.

Hopkins quickly tied the match at two apiece as Perez beat Samuel Loring 6-0, 6-1 at sixth singles. Senior Jensen Reiter then put Hopkins on top with a 6-1, 6-1 win at second over Frank. Sophomore Mike Buxbaum then topped Kaplan 6-2, 6-4 at first to put the Blue Jays up 4-2. Corty then clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Diniz at fifth. Junior Chris Jou made it a 6-2 match as he defeated Josh Kaseff 6-2, 6-2 at fourth. Chapman got a third point for the Red Devils with a 6-1, 0-6, 1-0 (10) win over junior Nicholas Garcia at third.

In the second match of the day, the teams played just two doubles matches and five singles matches. The Blue Jays and the Hoyas split the doubles matches to go into singles tied at 1-1. Buxbaum and sophomore Emerson Walsh got the first point of the match as they beat John Brosens and Jordan Portner 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8). The Hoyas answered when Andrew Dottino and Mac Rechan topped Kang and Perez 7-6 (4), 1-6, 1-0 (5).

In singles play, Jack Murphy gave Georgetown the lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Mackenzie at fifth. Alex Tropiano pushed the lead to 3-1 as he beat senior Erik Lim 6-4, 6-2 at fourth. Daniel Khanin followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win at first over sophomore Jeremy Dubin. Senior Noah Joachim got a point back for Hopkins as he beat Peter Beatty 6-4, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (5) at third. Marco Lam closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over senior Tanner Brown at second.

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 as the Blue Jays host the Gettysburg Bullets. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
