SWARTHMORE, PA - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team swept hosts Swarthmore and Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon to secure the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the ninth straight year. The Blue Jays finish out the regular season with a 15-4 overall record and an unblemished 10-0 mark in the CC. The win over Bryn Mawr extended Hopkins' conference win streak to 90.
Hopkins opened the day at Swarthmore and jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles. Junior Olivia Kasten and freshman Megumi Chen lost just one game in an 8-1 win at first over Alli Wong and Anna Scheibmeir. Sophomore Anna Kankanala and senior Macie Wilkins turned the same trick at second in a win over Jackie Lane and Abby Schmidt. Freshman Sunaina Vohra and Caroline Greydak closed out doubles as they beat Rachel Bronkema and Ashley Gao, 8-5, at third.
The Blue Jays then claimed all six singles matches without dropping a set as they completed their sweep of the Garnet. Chen, Kankanala and Kasten all lost just one game each in their wins. Chen topped Wong at first 6-1, 6-0 and Kasten beat Sophia Schuster 6-0, 6-1 at sixth. Kankanala clinched the win for Hopkins over Lane 6-1, 6-0 at fourth. Vohra won at second, 6-4, 6-0 over Scheibmeir and Greydak was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at third over Gao. Wilkins defeated Bronkema 6-3, 6-3 at fifth.
Hopkins made the short trip to Bryn Mawr to take on the Owls in both teams' regular season finale. The Blue Jays lost just two games in taking a quick 3-0 lead after doubles. Chen and Kasten played the minimum eight games in their win at first over Melina Koukoutchos and Lizzie Siegle. At second, Kankanala and Wilkins won 8-1 over Kendall Baller and Mariam Haider. And at third, Vohra and Greydak won by the same score over Eram Haider and Tirsa Delate.
The Blue Jays won again swept the singles matches in straight sets while three Jays did not lose a single game. Chen won at first over Siegle by a 6-0, 6-2 score. Vohra clinched the win for Hopkins as she shutout Koukoutchos 6-0, 6-0 at second. Greydak won by the same score at third as she beat Baller. And at fourth, Kankanala defeated Delate 6-1, 6-0. Wilkins beat Laske 6-2, 6-3 at fifth and Kasten shutout Molly MacDougall 6-0, 6-0.
Hopkins will be back in action on Saturday, May 2 in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament. Hopkins will play the winner of the Ursinus-Haverford first round match.
