Johns Hopkins Shuts Out Ursinus, 9-0

BALTIMORE, MD - The second-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team picked up a win over a conference foe, but dropped a pair of matches to top-five teams over the weekend. Hopkins fell to third-ranked Williams (7-2) and 10th-ranked Washington & Lee (5-4) but defeated Ursinus (9-0). The Blue Jays improve to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.

Hopkins opened the weekend with a tough loss to Williams on Friday in Fredericksburg, VA. The Ephs took a 2-1 lead into singles play with wins at second and third doubles. Senior Shannon Herndon and sophomore Ashnaa Rao picked up the Blue Jays' lone doubles point as they beat Julia Cancio and Maria Pylypiv at first, 8-3. Juli Raventos and Linda Shin won 8-6 over senior Elaine Baik and junior Sydney Lehman at second. And at third, Rebecca Curran and Maya Hart defeated freshman Megumi Chen and sophomore Jody Law, 8-4.

In singles play, Williams won five of the six matches to take the win in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament third-place match. Pylypiv won at first 6-0, 7-6 (3) over Rao while Lehman beat Raventos 6-4, 6-2 at second. Shin won in three over sophomore Amanda Austi 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 at third and at fourth, Curran beat La 6-2, 7-5. Cancio was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Chen at fifth and Mia Gancayo beat Herndon 6-1, 6-4 at sixth.

On Saturday, the Blue Jays took on the Generals in Lexington, VA and suffered their third straight 5-4 loss in the series. Washington & Lee took a 2-1 lead with wins at first and second doubles. Sonja Meighan and Patricia Kirkland edged Rao and Herndon, 8-5, at first. Meghan Buell and Brooke Donnelly defeated Baik and Lehman, 8-4, at second. Chen and Law earned Hopkins' doubles point with a 9-8 (3) win over Kelsey Vella and Michelle Fleenor.

The squads then split the six singles matches to take the team victory. Meighan beat Rao 6-1, 6-2 at first and Lehman was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Donnelly at second. Austi dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Buell at third. At fourth, Kirkland defeated Law 7-5, 6-1 while Chen won 6-2, 6-1 at fifth over Mary Elizabeth Shutley. And at sixth, Allison Hupalo won in three sets over Herndon 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 to claim the win for the Generals.

Up in Collegeville, Hopkins lost a combined five games in doubles and did not drop a set in singles in beating Ursinus. Sophomore Anna Kankanala and senior Macie Wilkins lost just one game in an 8-1 win at second over Audrey Whitebloom and Ariel Danziger. Senior Stephanie Rettig and junior Olivia Kasten turned the same trick at first as they beat Ashley Nguyen and Aileen Bevard. Freshman Caroline Greydak and sophomore Amanda Soo Ping Chow closed out doubles play with an 8-3 win over BreAnna Bashaw and Christina Cromwell at third.

In singles, Rettig pushed the Blue Jays lead to 4-0 as she beat Nguyen 6-2, 6-1 at first. Freshman Sunaina Vohra then clinched the win for Hopkins with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Whitebloom at second. Kankanala followed with a win at fourth, beating Cromwell 6-4, 6-2. Greydak then defeated Bashaw 6-3, 6-3 at third and Wilkins beat Bevard 6-3, 6-0 at fifth. And at sixth, Kasten completed the Blue Jays' sweep of the Bears with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Danziger.

Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, April 11 with matches at Washington College and Towson.
