Aug. 29, 2015 BALTIMORE, MD -- In the first of a seven-part series breaking down the 2015 Johns Hopkins football team, HopkinsSports.com takes a look at the Blue Jay special teams. While newcomers to the program may make an impact this season, the breakdown includes only returning players.
Who's Back: Quite simply, pretty much everyone. Two place-kickers, one punter and the top kickoff and punt return specialists. In addition, a number of players who were on the kickoff and punt return and coverage teams are also back.
Place-Kickers: Sophomore Jamie Sullivan and junior Nick Campbell both return and give the Blue Jays one of the top place-kicking tandems in the nation. During their careers, they have combined to connect on 17-of-22 field goals (.773) and 112-of-115 extra points (.974).
Punters: Junior Matt Auran is back after handling the punting chores a year ago. He averaged 33.0 yards per punt and dropped 10 of his attempts inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Return Specialists: Junior Bradley Munday has averaged 25.4 yards per kickoff return and 9.0 yards per punt return in his career. Classmates Stuart Walters (28.7 yards/KOR in 2014) and Quinn Donaldson (18.4) also played a big role on kickoff returns a year ago.
Special Teams Demon: HopkinsSports.com remembers thinking that there was no way the Blue Jays would ever find a special teams player like Adam Schweyer, who starred at Homewood from 2009-12. As ESPN Gameday icon Lee Corso would say ... "not so fast my friend". Is there a better player in the country on kickoff coverage than Johns Hopkins junior Dan Johnson? Johnson was in on 17 tackles on kickoff returns a year ago - no other player on the team was in on more than 10.
Don't think it's all Johnson though, Jack Toner and Jesse Poore both posted 10 special teams tackles a year ago and the top six players on the team in special teams tackles in 2014 are back (Johnson-Toner-Poore-Sebastian Edwards-Garrett Spek-Pat Runger).
Numbers to Know
3 - The number of different players back who have a career KOR return average of 21.9 or higher on nine or more returns (Munday, Walters, Evan Adamo).
17.3 - The opposition averaged just 17.3 yards per kickoff return against the Blue Jays last season.
80 - Bradley Munday had an 80-yard KOR return at F&M last season. That was the longest return by a JHU player since Richard Hill took one back 90 yards for a touchdown at McDaniel in 2007 and just the 11th KOR of 80+ yards by a Hopkins player since 1955.
