Nov. 29, 2016

2016 Division III CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Team

AUSTIN, TX - Three members of the Johns Hopkins football team have been named to the 2016 Division III CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Team it was announced today. Senior linebacker Jack Campbell (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls) and senior safety Jack Toner (Western Springs, IL/Benet Academy) were named to the first team, while sophomore offensive lineman Cameron Little (Zanesville, OH/Tri-Valley) earned second team honors. The three selections boost Johns Hopkins' all-time number of Academic All-Americans in football to 28.

Johns Hopkins' three selections are tied with St. John's (MN) for the second-most of any team in the nation and also tie the program record. This is the fourth time Johns Hopkins has produced three Academic All-Americans in football in the same season (2011, 2013, 2015, 2016); this is also the sixth straight year that head coach Jim Margraff's team has had two or more Academic All-Americans. Carnegie Mellon's four selections were the most among all Division III teams this season.

Campbell is majoring in Biology, has a 3.88 cumulative GPA and makes the jump to the first team after earning second team honors last season. He is the second Johns Hopkins linebacker to earn First Team Academic All-America honors as he joins John Arena on this distinguished list (Arena earned first team honors in 2012 and 2013).

A First Team All-Centennial selection this season, he led the team in tackles (101) for the second consecutive year and finished with career totals of 280 tackles, 11.5 tackles for losses, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries to his credit. He is the first Johns Hopkins player to record 100 or more tackles in back-to-back seasons in more than 20 years.

Campbell has served as a Patient Assistant volunteer at the Cleveland Clinic, helps tutor/mentor inner-city Baltimore children and was the student leader for the Johns Hopkins football Be the Match drive last spring. Campbell has twice worked as a summer research intern at the Cleveland Clinic and was also a clinical observer there during the summer of 2015.

Toner also makes the jump from the second team to the first team this season and becomes the first Johns Hopkins safety to earn first team honors. The 2016 Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time First Team All-Centennial selection, Toner posted 55 tackles, eight interceptions, four pass breakups and one fumble recovery this season. His eight interceptions tied the Johns Hopkins single-season record. He concludes his career with 188 tackles, 18 interceptions, 22 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries; his 18 interceptions rank second in school history.

Toner is majoring in economics with a minor in entrepreneurship and management and boasts a 3.78 cumulative GPA. He is a volunteer with the Johns Hopkins' AND1 Tutoring program with young local athletes and the Stop Soldier Suicide Golf Outing. He has completed summer internships at the Financial Strategy Network (2014), the William Blair & Co (2015) and Private Vista (2016).

Little rounds out Johns Hopkins' Academic All-America selections with his place on the second team. He is the first sophomore in program history to earn Academic All-America honors and was one of just two sophomores nationwide named to the team.

Little, a First Team All-Centennial Conference selection this season in his first year as a starter, helped lead an offensive line that is paved the way for an offense that averaged 41.4 points and 510.1 yards per game; the Blue Jays rank 12th in the nation in scoring offense and eighth in total offense and the 510.1 yards per game is a school record, while JHU's 41.4 points per game rank second in school history.

Little is the Director of Operations for the Johns Hopkins Financial Analysts Club and was a Financial Advisory/Wealth Management intern at Merrill Lynch last summer. He is also the Assistant Editor of the Economics and Business section of the Baltimore Zeitgeist newspaper and carries a 3.81 cumulative grade point average in economics with a minor in financial economics and entrepreneurship and management.

Johns Hopkins posted an 11-1 record, won an eighth straight Centennial Conference title and spent the entire 2016 season ranked in the top 15 in the nation. The Blue Jays made their sixth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Playoffs and advanced to the second round for the fourth time in five years.
