WACO, TX - Johns Hopkins senior safety Jack Toner (Western Springs, IL/Benet Academy) has been named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III All-America First Team it was announced today. This is the first time Toner has garnered AFCA All-America honors and his selection marks the fourth time in five years that Johns Hopkins has had a player named to the team.
The nod to the AFCA All-America Team is the latest in a long line of honors for Toner, who will graduate as one of the most decorated players in program history. In addition to the All-America selection from the AFCA, he earned First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America, First Team D3football.com All-South, Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Centennial Conference honors this season. He is the first player in school history to earn First Team All-America and First Team Academic All-America.
Toner posted 55 tackles, eight interceptions, four pass breakups and one fumble recovery in 2016. His eight interceptions tied the Johns Hopkins single-season record and he concludes his career with 188 tackles, 18 interceptions, 22 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries; his 18 interceptions rank second in school history.
Toner is majoring in economics with a minor in entrepreneurship and management and boasts a 3.78 cumulative GPA. He is a volunteer with the Johns Hopkins' AND1 Tutoring program with young local athletes and the Stop Soldier Suicide Golf Outing. He has completed summer internships at the Financial Strategy Network (2014), the William Blair & Co (2015) and Private Vista (2016).
Johns Hopkins posted an 11-1 record, won an eighth straight Centennial Conference title and spent the entire 2016 season ranked in the top 15 in the nation. The Blue Jays made their sixth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Playoffs and advanced to the second round for the fourth time in five years.
During Toner's career, the Blue Jays posted a 43-4 record and never lost a regular season game (40-0).
