How it Happened
• Towson jumped on top early when Emily Gillingham scored on an underhand shot from eight yards out in the left alley just 2:49 into the contest. Hopkins answered 81 seconds later when senior Dene' DiMartino cashed in on a free position attempt, the 44th of her career.
• The Tigers answered with a methodical five-goal run that spanned more than 29 minutes and bridged halftime. Carly Tellekamp kick started the run with a free position goal at 17:50. Katie Sciandra scored a free position of her own at 10:26 to stake Towson to a 3-1 lead at the half.
• Tellekamp opened the second-half scoring at the 27:36-mark when she scored on an overhead shot from the center of the fan. Just over two minutes later, Natalie Sulmonte converted a free position shot to push the Tigers' lead to 5-1. Gillingham capped the run with 18:43 to play in the game, scoring on another underhand shot.
• Hopkins answered with three goals in just 3:15 to pull within two with 12:52 to play. Sophomore Shannon Fitzgerald got things going when she dodged from behind the cage, spun inside her defender and scored from in-tight at 16:07. DiMartino then deflected a pass from senior Jenna Reifler past Angie Benson to make it 6-3. DiMartino followed with her second free position goal of the day to make it a two-goal game.
• Towson's defense, which came into the game ranked fifth in the nation, shut down Hopkins from there. The Tigers would get three more goals in the final 12 minutes to close out the win.
