Megumi Chen clinched the win at first singles.
BALTIMORE, MD – The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team shutout visiting Swarthmore, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon to clinch the top seed in the Centennial Conference (CC) Tournament. The Blue Jays (15-4) complete the conference regular season undefeated for the 10th straight season and have now won 100 straight regular season CC matches.
Hopkins swept the doubles, losing just four games in the process, to jump out to a 3-0 lead on Swarthmore. Sophomore Megumi Chen and freshman Kimberly Zou won 8-2 at first doubles over Alli Wong and Maria Cuervo. Senior Olivia Kasten and freshman Chrissy Simon won by the same score at third against Rachel Bronkema and Ashley Gao.
The Blue Jays took five of the six singles matches in straight sets as they prevailed in the battle of conference unbeaten. Chen clinched the win for the Blue Jays as she beat Julia Gokhberg 6-0, 6-1 at first singles. Zou was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at second over Wong while Simon defeated Arya Jemal 6-2, 6-1 at third. Junior Anna Kankanala came from behind to beat Anna Scheibmeir 6-7, (4), 6-2, 1-0 (8) at fourth. Kasten was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Bronkema at fifth and junior Amanda Soo Ping Chow lost just one game in her win over Cuervo at sixth.
Hopkins will host the Centennial Conference Tournament for the 10th straight year next weekend at the JHU Tennis Courts. Hopkins will face the winner of Dickinson-Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, May 7 in the semifinals.
