Johns Hopkins-Washington & Lee Football Notes in PDF Format
The Game: Johns Hopkins opens the 2016 season as the Blue Jays welcome Washington & Lee to Homewood Field for one of the top non-conference games in Division III this season.
A Look Back: Johns Hopkins posted an 11-1 record, won a seventh straight Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the sixth time in seven years last season.
Poll Position: Johns Hopkins earned top 20 preseason rankings in two polls. The Blue Jays were ranked 13th by The Sporting News and 15th by D3football.com.
Against the ODAC: This week's game against Washington & Lee will be the 32nd for Johns Hopkins against a team from the ODAC since head coach Jim Margraff took over in 1990. The Blue Jays are currently 22-9 against ODAC teams under Margraff's direction, including 6-1 against Washington & Lee.
For Openers: Johns Hopkins is 16-9-1 in season-openers under head coach Jim Margraff and the Blue Jays have currently won 13 of their last 17 openers.
Oh Captain, My Captain: Johns Hopkins will be led this season by senior co-captains Jack Campbell, Jonathan Germano, Bradley Munday and Jack Toner.
10-0 vs. 10-0: There will be more than 1,200 Division III football games played this season. Yet, this week's game between Johns Hopkins and Washington & Lee is the only game among those 1,200+ that will feature two teams that posted 10-0 regular season records in 2015.
JHU Ties Victory Record: Johns Hopkins tied the school record for wins in a season with its 11 last season. The Blue Jays first won 11 games in a season in 2014 after winning 10 in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Centennial Conference Champions: Johns Hopkins claimed its record 11th Centennial Conference title last season with all 11 championships coming since 2002. JHU's 11 CC titles are two more than Dickinson and Muhlenberg have accumulated. Even more impressive? Hopkins' was the last team in the league to win its first title (2002), but the first to get to 10 championships.
I'm Honored: Johns Hopkins suffered some big losses to graduation after the 2015 season, but the Blue Jays still return eight players who earned All-Centennial Conference honors a year ago. Below is a list of JHU's returning All-CC selections:
Chantz Anderson (C) - 2nd Team
Jack Campbell (LB) - 2nd Team
Jonathan Germano (QB) - 2nd Team
Lance Hammond (DL) - 2nd Team
Keonte Henson (DL) - 1st Team
Dan Johnson (DB) - 2nd Team
Bradley Munday (WR) - 1st Team
Jack Toner (S) - 1st Team
One of Four: Johns Hopkins is one of just four teams in the nation to be ranked in the top 20 by the AFCA every week since the start of the 2012 season. The others are Mount Union, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Linfield.
Centennial Favorites: For the eighth consecutive year and the 11th time in the last 13 years, Johns Hopkins was selected as the favorite in the Centennial Conference preseason poll of coaches and SIDs. The Blue Jays received 17 of 20 first-place votes and totaled 159 points to out-distance Muhlenberg, which checked in at number two in the poll with two first-place votes and 144 points.
Sweet September: Johns Hopkins enters the 2016 season having won 23 straight and 26 of its last 27 games in the month of September. The only team to beat JHU in the month of September in its last 27 games? Randolph-Macon, which posted a 41-37 win over JHU on September 11, 2010.
More September: Johns Hopkins has not lost a home game in the month of September since September 22, 2007, when Moravian escaped Homewood with a 44-41 victory. Since then the Blue Jays have won 15 straight at home in September.
State of Affairs: The 87-man Johns Hopkins football team includes players from 19 different states.
Margraff Holds State Record: Johns Hopkins head coach Jim Margraff became the winningest college football coach in Maryland state history with a 42-14 win at Ursinus late in the 2014 season as that gave him 175 career victories, a mark he upped to 189 with 11 wins durig the 2015 season.
Margraff now sports a career record of 189-84-3 (.690) entering this week's game against Washington & Lee.
On a Roll: Johns Hopkins is 53-1 in its last 54 regular season games dating back to late in the 2010 season. The only team to top the Blue Jays duirng that run? Franklin & Marshall, which topped the Blue Jays, 14-12, in 2012.
On A Roll, Part II: Johns Hopkins is 57-6 in its last 63 games overall since late in the 2010 season.
Sustained Success: Since the start of the 2002 season the Blue Jays sport a 123-34 (.783) record. Taking it back farther, the Blue Jays are 129-37 (.777) since the start of the 2001 season and 134-42 (.761) since the beginning of the 2000 season.
Seven's Heaven: Since the beginning of the 2003 season the Blue Jays are 114-25 (.820) when scoring more than seven points and 0-7 when they have been held to seven points or less.
At Home at Homewood: Johns Hopkins has parlayed its home field advantage into victories in recent years. In fact, the Blue Jays are 26-4 (.867) in the home blacks since the start of the 2010 season.
