• The Short Story: Junior Clare Kavanagh scored both goals for the Johns Hopkins field hockey team as it beat visiting Washington College, 2-1, in both teams' Centennial Conference opener Friday night. The Blue Jays scored with just 2:24 to play in the second overtime to win.
How it Happened
• Hopkins got on the board with 4:19 remaining in the half as the Blue Jays took advantage of a penalty corner. Freshman Katie McErlean inserted, sending the ball up top to senior Austin Davis, who passed to junior Clare Kavanagh. She collected the pass and lifted a shot over the outstretched stick of Morgan Domanico.
• The Blue Jays nearly doubled their lead with a little over 24 minutes to play in the game. A shot by senior Lindsey Adams eluded Domanico, but her teammate Courtney Rainey cleared the ball out, keeping it a one-goal game.
• The Shorewomen knotted the score with just 4:10 to play, capitalizing on a corner of their own. Allison Remenapp sent the corner out to Elizabeth Davis, who dribbled in and fired a shot inside the right post to make it 1-1.
• After more than 27 minutes of back-and-forth play in overtime, Kavanagh finally gave the Blue Jays the win with her second goal of the game. Senior Victoria Piscopo dribbled down the right side and centered the ball across the mouth of the cage to Kavanagh, who redirected it at the far post.
