Sept. 26, 2016 BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins senior linebacker Garrett Spek has been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Blue Jays' 30-24 win at Muhlenberg on Saturday (September 24). This is the first time in Spek's career that he has earned the award.
One week after notching a then career high 15 tackles in a key 29-21 win against Moravian, Spek did himself one better as he notched a personal-best 16 tackles and added two sacks and a pass breakup in the win at Muhlenberg. The Mules entered the game ranked 24th in the nation.
Spek now leads the team and the Centennial Conference with 49 tackles on the year. He recorded the 100th tackle of his career in the win over Moravian and now has career totals of 120 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks and three interceptions.
Johns Hopkins, which was ranked ninth in the nation entering the game at Muhlenberg, improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference with the win against the Mules; JHU is the only remaining unbeaten team in the Centennial. The Blue Jays will return to action on Saturday, October 1 when they welcome Juniata (3-1, 2-1 CC) to Homewood Field for the team's final game before the bye week.
