• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins field hockey team used three first-half goals to defeat host Gettysburg, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jays scored a pair of quick goals to take a 2-0 lead by the 6:16-mark in the first half. Senior Clare Kavanagh struck first when she buried a rebound off a Haley Mowery save on Lucy Reider at 3:19. Senior Princess Sutherland made it a two-goal game less than three minutes later. Senior Francesca Cali hit a long ball from outside of the circle and Sutherland redirected it into the left side of the cage.
• Junior Megan Ophel pushed the Blue Jays lead to three with 4:03 to play in the first half. From the left side, Sutherland passed the ball to Reider, who fired a shot on the cage. Ophel tipped the shot past Mowery and into the cage.
• Gettysburg got on the board at the 45:58-mark to make it a 3-1 game. Victoria Umbach scored for the Bullets as she put back her own rebound off a save by senior Greta Helvie.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 20-19-1 all-time against Gettysburg and wins its first in the series since 2014.
• Hopkins sits in second place in the conference with a showdown for first place set for Saturday against F&M. The win today secured a first-round bye in the Centennial Conference Tournament as the Blue Jays will finish no lower than third. Hopkins earned a first-round bye for the first time since 2011 season.

Inside the Box Score
• Kavanagh scored her team-leading 12th goal on the season, which ranks second in the conference. She now has 21 goals in her career, which is tied for 17th in program history.
• Sutherland scored her career-best seventh goal and is now tied for 15th in JHU history with 22 career goals.
• Sophomore Jodie Baris got the start and made one save in the first half. Senior Greta Helvie came on in the second half and finished with six saves. Mowery made 10 saves in the loss for the Bullets.
• Hopkins outshot Gettysburg, 17-13, while the Bullets had an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.

• Hopkins returns to Homewood Field to host 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, October 28. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm. Hopkins will honor its six seniors prior to the start of the game.
