The Short Story
Johns Hopkins fell behind early to NYU before posting eight runs in a row to earn the win, 8-4, over the Violets Friday. Joe Conlon led the Blue Jays with three hits, including his first home run of the season, and three RBI in their opening game in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
• NYU came out strong, tallying three runs in the first two innings. Leadoff batter Walter hit a single to begin the game and stole second before rounding home on a single by Hendershot for the first run. A double by Francesconi sent home a pair of Violets to help NYU out to an early 3-0 lead.
• The Blue Jays broke through for their first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dan Albert singled to left center and advanced to second with two outs. Joe Conlon doubled to right field to drive in Albert. Tommy Mee worked a walk to join Conlon on base, and a single by Brian Lin sent Conlon home to cut JHU's deficit to 3-2.
The Blue Jays worked five walks and took advantage of a batter hit by a pitch, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly for a four-run sixth inning, without a hit. NYU sent three different pitchers to the mound in the sixth, but each struggled to find the strike zone. In total, the six pitchers Hopkins faced recorded one strikeout.
• Hopkins added to its lead in the bottom of the eighth. Conlon stepped to the plate and homered to center field for his first home run of the season. Lin walked to first base and stole second to be in scoring position. Conor Reynolds posted a single for Lin to add the eighth run to JHU's total.
Nick Burns earned his first win on the season as he pitched the first six innings. Burns struck out four Violets in the game. Josh Hejka pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Blue Jays, picking up the save as he struck out three to close out the victory.
