The Short Story
• The Johns Hopkins baseball team topped Vassar College, 6-3, Tuesday as the Blue Jays recorded four runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open a 2-2 tie.
• Vassar took a two-run lead in the first inning, recording three hits off starting pitcher Harrison Folk. After a fly out, back-to-back Brewers hit singles, before a double by Smach drove them in for the 2-0 lead. The Blue Jays turned a 463 double play to get out of the inning.
• Hopkins tallied its first run in the bottom of the third. Conor Reynolds worked his second walk of the game to reach first base. Brian Lin followed him with a single to right field, and Reynolds advanced to third. Pitcher Silvers threw a wild pitch, which allowed Lin to advance to second. When catcher Doyle corralled the ball, he made a bad throw to second, allowing Reynolds to round home on the error.
• Reynolds reached base for the third time without a hit in the bottom of the fifth as he was hit by a pitch. Mike Smith sent a single through the left side to advance Reynolds to second, and Ryan Orgielewicz drove Reynolds home for the tying run with a single to nearly the same spot as Smith's. A pair of fly outs ended the inning, increasing the number of Blue Jays left on base to seven through five innings.
• The Blue Jays pieced together four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the advantage over Vassar. Mike Eberle took over as the pinch hitter in the leadoff spot and worked a walk to reach first base. Tim Kutcher stepped in as the pinch runner, advancing to second on a wild pitch before rounding home on a triple to center field by DH Reynolds. Lin, Smith and Orgielewicz each contributed a single to load the bases, with Lin earning the RBI for Reynolds crossing home for the 4-2 Hopkins lead. Joe Conlon stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded, knocking a two RBI single through the right side adding insurance to the JHU lead, 6-2.
• Hopkins took the field for the top of the ninth, with Donohue at the mound. Donohue retired Koscielniak for his second strikeout on the day, and JHU recorded the second out as Lin made the grab in right field. Vassar took advantage of a walk and a pair of singles to earn their third run of the season. Reynolds made his first pitching appearance for Hopkins, pitching to Smach for a fly foul out by Daniel Albert to end the game.
• After giving up two runs in the first inning, Folk pitched five innings without giving up a run. The sophomore scattered six hits and struck out two on the day. Austin Sutor took over in the top of the seventh, pitching for two outs without giving up a hit. Donohue earned the win, surrendering three hits and a run in two innings pitched.
