Johns Hopkins Bests Swarthmore; Clinches Centennial Top Seed

• The Short Story: The 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team prevailed in a battle of unbeatens on Saturday at 40th-ranked Swarthmore. Hopkins beat Swarthmore, 8-1, to finish the conference schedule undefeated and clinch the top seed in the tournament.

How it Happened
• Hopkins took a 2-1 lead into singles play with wins at second and third. Senior Jody Law and junior Caroline Greydak opened the match with an 8-2 win at second over Maria Cuervo and Alli Wong.
• Sophomore Kimberly Zou and freshman Sophia Strickland doubled the Blue Jays' lead with an 8-2 win at third over Shirline Wee and Vivien Fernandez.
• The Garnet picked up a point and cut the Jays' lead in half as Emma Kassan and Anna Scheibmeir edged seniors Mikey Barthelmass and Ashnaa Rao 9-8 (9) at first.
• Barthelmass rebounded with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Audrey Haring to put Hopkins on top 3-1. Law followed with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 defeat of Fernandez at second.
• Zou clinched the win and the regular season championship when she beat Cuervo 6-0, 6-2 at fifth. Strickland then beat Wee 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at third to make it a 6-1 match.
• Greydak won 6-4, 6-1 over Wong at fourth and Rao closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kassan at first.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 25-18 all-time against Swarthmore and has won 16 straight in the series.
• The Blue Jays ran their Centennial Conference regular season win streak to 110. Hopkins has also won 20 straight CC Tournament matches.
• Hopkins is the number one seed in the CC Tournament for the 11th straight year.
• JHU has now won 15 or matches in each of the last eight years and 10 of the last 11.

For the Record
• Rao won her 49th career singles match, moving her into a tie for seventh in program history. She is also tied for 10th now with 82 combined career wins.
• Law now has 75 combined career wins, which is tied for 17th in school history.

Up Next
• Hopkins will host the 2017 Centennial Conference Tournament on May 6 and 7. JHU will face the winner of Washington College and Haverford in Saturday's semifinal. The start time for the match is yet to be determined.
