2017 Johns Hopkins Football Preview - Offensive Line

Aug. 26, 2017

BALTIMORE, MD – In the second of a seven-part series breaking down the 2017 Johns Hopkins football team, HopkinsSports.com takes a look at the Blue Jay offensive line. While newcomers to the program may make an impact this season, the breakdown includes only returning players.

Who's Gone: No way to avoid the obvious – the Blue Jays need to replace one of the top centers in school history as Chantz Anderson took his Third Team D3football.com All-America nod and two All-Centennial selections with him when he graduated last spring. Although the other four starters on the line return, replacing Anderson will be no small task.

An Experienced Group: One year after Anderson was the only returning starter on the offensive line, the unit returns four starters in seniors Anthony Campanile (T) and Trevor Allen (G) and juniors Cameron Little (T) and Zack Toussaint (G) in 2017. Campanile, Little and Toussaint started all 12 games a year ago, while Allen played in 11 games with 10 starts on the year – there is no shortage of big-game experience in this group.

In addition to the returning starters, the Blue Jays also have five other offensive linemen – Joe Figueroa, Frank Petracco, Ben Gaal, Jarrett Smith and Laurence Okeke – returning who played in at least eight games in 2016. Figueroa and Petracco both played in all 12 games as freshmen a year ago and figure to play big roles on the line moving forward.

I'm Honored: Little went from reserve tackle as a freshman in 2015 to Third Team D3football.com All-South, First Team All-Centennial Conference and Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-America as a sophomore last season. Johns Hopkins has produced at least one All-American along the offensive line in each of the last five years and Little figures to be the Blue Jays' best bet to continue that run.

Little wasn't the only first-time starter to earn All-Centennial honors last season as senior co-captain Anthony Campanile stepped in at the tackle spot opposite Little last season and grabbed second team honors. At 6-5, 285 pounds, Campanile provides an imposing presence on the end and excellent leadership to a close-knit group.

Did You Know: Johns Hopkins has produced at least three All-Centennial Conference offensive linemen every year during their current eight-year run at the top of the league. Since the Centennial was formed in 1983, Johns Hopkins offensive linemen have earned first team (37), second team (23) and honorable mention (12) All-CC honors 72 times.

Inside the Numbers
15 – The Johns Hopkins offensive line allowed just 15 sacks on 507 pass attempts last season (not including instances where Blue Jay quarterbacks scrambled for positive yardage on a pass attempt). That translates into one sack every 33.8 attempts.

3.44 – Johns Hopkins' nine most experienced returning offensive linemen (noted above) combined to post a 3.44 GPA in the 2017 spring semester.

510.1 – Playing behind 80% of what figures to be this season's starting offensive line, Johns Hopkins averaged a school-record 510.1 yards per game in 2016.
