The Game: Johns Hopkins opens the 2017 season as the Blue Jays travel to Lexington, Virginia to take on Washington & Lee. Kickoff at Wilson Field is set for 7 pm on Friday, September 1.

A Look Back: Johns Hopkins posted an 11-1 record, won an eighth straight Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the seventh time in eight years last season.

Poll Position: Despite suffering heavy losses to graduation, Johns Hopkins earned several top 20 preseason rankings. The Blue Jays were ranked fifth by Lindy's, 12th by Street & Smith's and 13th by D3football.com. Johns Hopkins also topped the Centennial Conference preseason poll.

Against the ODAC: This week's game against Washington & Lee will be the 34th for Johns Hopkins against a team from the ODAC since head coach Jim Margraff took over in 1990. The Blue Jays are currently 24-9 against ODAC teams under Margraff's direction, including 7-1 against Washington & Lee.
Hopkins' first and last wins of the 2016 season came against ODAC competition as JHU topped W&L, 45-29, in the season opener and topped Randolph-Macon, 42-21, in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs.

For Openers: Johns Hopkins is 17-9-1 in season-openers under head coach Jim Margraff and the Blue Jays have currently won six straight openers and 14 of their last 18.

Oh Captain, My Captain: Johns Hopkins will be led this season by senior co-captains Brett Caggiano, Anthony Campanile, Ryan Cary, Keonte Henson and Michael Munday.

Friday Night Lights: This week's game against Washington & Lee will be the 55th Johns Hopkins has played on Friday night since 1982. Since then, the Blue Jays have compiled a 37-16-1 (.694) record in Friday night games, including a 33-11-1 (.744) mark under head coach Jim Margraff.

JHU Ties Victory Record: Johns Hopkins tied the school record for wins in a season with its 11 last season. The Blue Jays first won 11 games in a season in 2014 and matched that in 2015 and 2016 after winning 10 in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Centennial Conference Champions: Johns Hopkins claimed its record 12th Centennial Conference title last season with all 12 championships coming since 2002. JHU's 12 CC titles are three more than Dickinson and Muhlenberg have accumulated. Even more impressive? Hopkins' was the last team in the league to win its first title (2002), but the first to get to 10 championships.

Playoff Bound: With the 2016 Centennial Conference title came an automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs. Hopkins made its sixth straight trip to the NCAAs, seventh in eight years and eighth overall. All eight appearances have some since 2005.

41 Straight: With a perfect 10-0 record in the regular season last year, Johns Hopkins extended its regular season winning streak to 41 games dating back to the end of the 2012 season.

37 Straight: With the perfect 9-0 Centennial Conference record last season, Johns Hopkins extended its league winning streak to 37 games dating back to late in the 2012 season. The 37-game run is the longest streak in league history and the longest active conference winning streak in all divisions of NCAA college football.

Sweet September: Johns Hopkins enters the 2017 season having won 27 straight and 30 of its last 31 games in the month of September. The only team to beat JHU in the month of September in its last 31 games? Randolph-Macon, which posted a 41-37 win over JHU on September 11, 2010.

More September: Johns Hopkins has not lost a home game in the month of September since September 22, 2007, when Moravian escaped Homewood with a 44-41 victory. Since then the Blue Jays have won 17 straight at home in September.

State of Affairs: The 93-man Johns Hopkins football team includes players from 19 different states.

I'm Honored: Johns Hopkins suffered some big losses to graduation after the 2016 season, but the Blue Jays still return six players who earned All-Centennial Conference honors a year ago. Below is a list of JHU's returning All-CC selections:

Brett Caggiano (TE) - 1st Team
Anthony Campanile (OL) - 2nd Team
Ryan Cary (RB) - 2nd Team
Lance Hammond (DL) - Honorable Mention
Keonte Henson (DL) - 1st Team
Cameron Little (OL) - 1st Team

First Time Starter at Quarterback: Regardless of who gets the start at quarterback at Washington & Lee this week, they will be starting the first game of their career. The last eight Johns Hopkins quarterbacks making their first career start all fared well as each came up with victories; those results are listed below:

Shane Kibbe - RMC (2006), W/21-14
Michael Murray - Muhlenberg (2006), W/10-7
Max Islinger - McDaniel (2007), W/31-3
Tyler Porco - St. Lawrence (2008), W/34-3
Hewitt Tomlin - RMC (2008), W/39-31 (3OT)
Robbie Matey - Muhlenberg (2011), W/27-17
Braden Anderson - RMC (2014), W/42-3
Jonathan Germano - RMC (2015), W/52-17

One of Four: Johns Hopkins is one of just four teams in the nation to be ranked in the top 20 by the AFCA every week since the start of the 2012 season. The others are Mount Union, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Linfield.

Margraff Holds State Record: Johns Hopkins head coach Jim Margraff became the winningest college football coach in Maryland state history with a 42-14 win at Ursinus late in the 2014 season as that gave him 175 career victories, a mark he upped to 200 with 11 wins durig the 2016 season. Margraff now sports a career record of 200-85-3 (.700) entering this week's game at Washington & Lee.

First 100, Last 100: It took Johns Hopkins football coach Jim Margraff 158 games to reach career win number 100 (which he secured with a 14-0 victory against Gettysburg in 2005). It took him just 129 games to win his next 100 as career victory number 200 came with a 42-21 victory against Randolph-Macon in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Playoffs.

On a Roll: Johns Hopkins is 63-1 in its last 64 regular season games dating back to late in the 2010 season. The only team to top the Blue Jays duirng that run? Franklin & Marshall, which topped the Blue Jays, 14-12, in 2012.

On A Roll, Part II: Johns Hopkins is 68-7 in its last 75 games overall since late in the 2010 season.

Sustained Success: Since the start of the 2002 season the Blue Jays sport a 134-35 (.793) record. Taking it back farther, the Blue Jays are 140-38 (.787) since the start of the 2001 season and 145-43 (.771) since the beginning of the 2000 season.

Seven's Heaven: Since the beginning of the 2003 season the Blue Jays are 125-26 (.818) when scoring more than seven points and 0-7 when they have been held to seven points or less.

At Home at Homewood: Johns Hopkins has parlayed its home field advantage into victories in recent years. In fact, the Blue Jays are 38-5 (.884) in the home blacks since the start of the 2010 season.
