The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's swim team kicked off the three-day Janis Hape Dowd Nike Invitational Friday night with some strong swims against Division I competition.

Top Finishers
• Hopkins opened the night with a third-place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Junior
Jasper Van Cauwelaert, sophomore
Marcelo Lauzurique, senior
Peter Lazorchak and sophomore
Noah Frassrand swam a 1:25.51.
• Freshman
Mitchell Simmons led a contingent of Blue Jays in the 500 Free with a fourth-place finish. He clocked in with an NCAA B and career-best time of 4:32.63. Sophomore
Riley Mears placed sixth with a career-best time of 434.28. Senior
Erik Bostrom finished in ninth place in 4:39.61 and junior
Matthew Garza took 11
th in 4:45.31.
• Lauzurique then took fourth with a career-best time of 1:53.54 in the 200 IM. Frassrand followed closely in fifth place with a time of 1:53.95. Van Cauwelaert touched in 1:54.04 to finish in sixth place.
• Lazorchak swam a 21.28 to place seventh in the 50 Free, with sophomore
Dillon De Priest took 10
th in 21.75.
• The Blue Jays ended the first day with first and second-place finishes in the 400 Medley Relay. Mears, Simmons, Garza and Frassrand swam a 3:30.65 to take the top spot. Mears turned in a career-best time of 53.18 in this lead-off leg. Lazorchak, Van Cauwelaert, De Priest and Bostrom combined for a 3:32.61 to finish in second.
