WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team won three of our matches at the Mid-Winter Duals on Saturday as the Blue Jays topped Thaddeus Stevens (45-12), Hunter (39-17) and Penn Tech (25-24) with the lone loss coming against ninth-ranked NYU (35-15). Penn Tech hosted the event at Liberty Arena and the Blue Jays improved to 5-5 on the year with their 3-1 mark today.
Â
Match of the Day
The final match of the day proved to be the best as Hopkins topped host Penn Tech, 25-24, on criteria. After the teams battled to a 24-24 draw, the Blue Jays earned the extra point on the third criteria – most points scored in matches decided by decision or major decision (19-17).
Â
Johns Hopkins trailed 15-6 after four matches, but a
Bradlee Lamontagne decision at 157, another by
Dominick Reyes at 165 and a second-period pin from sophomore
Jack Albin at 174 gave the Blue Jays an 18-12 lead. Albin bumped up three weight classes from 149 for the match at 174.
Senior
Nathan Wertheimer needed just 44 seconds to pin Jalen Edwards at 197 before Penn Tech earned a forfeit win to tie the match at 24 and send things into criteria, where the Blue Jays held the advantage to score the victory.
Â
Other Highlights
In the opening match against Thaddeus Stevens, the Blue Jays won three of the four matches wrestled and picked up five wins by forfeit to fuel the 45-12 victory, while JHU won five of the seven matches wrestled in the 39-17 win over Hunter with three matches won by forfeit (two for JHU, one for Hunter).
Â
Against ninth-ranked NYU, the Blue Jays got first-period pins from freshman
Brent Lorin (125) and Reyes and a win by decision from sophomore
Jared Osborne (149). The Violets led 23-15 before winning the final two bouts by forfeit to account for the 35-15 final score.
Â
Quick Work – Part I
Johns Hopkins collected 10 wins by pin on the day, including three by Reyes and two each from Lorin and Wertheimer.
Â
Quick Work – Part II
Of the 10 pins the Blue Jays earned, seven came in the first period and six of those came in the first minute. Wertheimer (19 seconds against Thaddeus Stevens), Lorin (16 seconds against NYU) and Reyes (13 seconds against Hunter) all picked up wins by fall in less than 20 seconds. Reyes' 13-second pin against Michael McCabe of Hunter is the fastest on record for a Johns Hopkins wrestler in the last 12 seasons.
Â
That Was Perfect
Lorin and Reyes both went 4-0 on the day to lead the way for Johns Hopkins.
Â
Notes of Interest
Reyes' four wins improve his career record to 74-24 and his three pins give him 26 in his career – he moved into fifth place on JHU's career pins list with his three today and has now won 12 consecutive matches • Wertheimer's two pins give him a team-leading 12 on the year and leave him just one shy of the JHU single-season record; he also now has 20 pins in his career • Lorin's four wins today run his winning streak to eight straight and he is 9-1 in his last 10 matches • Osborne won his first three matches of the day to run his winning streak to seven before that was snapped with a 3-1 loss to Jesse Walker against Penn Tech – still, he is 9-2 in his last 11 bouts.

Johns Hopkins will host McDaniel on Wednesday, January 22 (7 pm) in a Centennial Conference match in Goldfarb Gymnasium. Six of the last eight Hopkins-McDaniel matches have been decided by six points or less.
