BALTIMORE, MD – First-year Johns Hopkins University men's lacrosse coach
Peter Milliman announced today that
Cole Williams,
Jack Lyne and
Joey Epstein have been selected in a vote by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2021 season.
Â
"During a unique time with unprecedented challenges, Cole, Jack and Joey have provided outstanding leadership on and off the field," Milliman noted. "Working through our fall semester that was conducted virtually with no official in-person team activities and now through the first four weeks of practice, these three young men have provided much-needed guidance to our young team. Never has veteran leadership been more crucial than during the this year and I am excited to announce their well-deserved selection as our captains."
Â
Williams returns for his final season having played in all 54 games during his career with 39 consecutive starts to his credit. An Honorable Mention USILA All-American as a sophomore and a two-time Second Team All-Big Ten selection, he counts 79 goals and 43 assists for 122 points to his credit. He had career-highs of 35 goals and 49 points as a sophomore, added 27 goals and 19 assists as a junior and led the team in points (17) and assists (6) and was tied for the team-lead in goals (11) when the 2020 ended. Williams is currently enrolled as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins' Carey Business School.
Â
Lyne, a fifth-year senior, battled through injuries during his first three seasons at Homewood before emerging as a starter on defense for the Blue Jays during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He started all six games last season after appearing in just two contests prior to 2020; he had one ground ball and one caused turnover on the year. Lyne is majoring in international studies.
Â
Epstein is in his second year as a captain after becoming the first sophomore captain at Johns Hopkins since Kevin Mahon in 1975 when he was selected last season. In one full season plus five games, Epstein has scored 53 goals and added 30 assists for 83 points with seven extra-man goals and three game-winners to his credit. He reached the 50-goal mark in just 19 games to become only the sixth player in school history to reach the mark in less than 20 games and set JHU freshman records with 48 goals and 73 points in 2019, when he earned First Team All-Big Ten and Third Team USILA All-America honors while also being tabbed the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2019. Epstein is double-majoring in philosophy and political science.
