Blue Jays Head to Allentown for Top-25 Matchup Against the Mules

The Game
«  Johns Hopkins (5-0, 4-0 CC) hits the road for the fourth time in six games as the Blue Jays travel to Allentown to take on Muhlenberg (4-1, 3-1 CC).

A Look Back
«  Johns Hopkins improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference with a 66-10 win over Franklin & Marshall on October 2.  The Blue Jays had a bye last weekend.
« Muhlenberg picked up its second consecutive win with a 54-19 win at Gettysburg on October 2.

The Facts
«  This is the 136th season of Johns Hopkins football.  JHU first fielded a team in 1882.
«  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 568-487-58 (.536).
«  Since the start of the 2010 season, the Blue Jays are 105-17 (.861) overall and 86-8 (.915) in the Centennial Conference.
«  Overall, JHU owns 14 Centennial Conference titles (all won since 2002) and has qualified for the NCAA Playoffs 10 times (all since 2005).

Poll Position
« Despite not playing last weekend, Johns Hopkins continued to inch up in the national rankings as the Blue Jays are in the top 15 in both the AFCA (11th) and D3football.com (14th) polls this week.
« Johns Hopkins was listed as receiving votes in the D3football.com preseason poll, but jumped to #25 in the first in-season poll (Sept. 5) and has steadily moved up to 21st, 18th, 15th and now 14th.
« Since the AFCA Poll debuted in 1999, this week's #11 ranking marks the 103rd time JHU has been ranked in the top 25.  More recently, the Blue Jays are in the top 25 for the 86th time in the last 94 polls dating back to 2011.
«  Since the D3football.com Poll debuted in 2003, this week's #14 ranking marks the 117th time Johns Hopkins has appeared in the top 25.

Ranked vs. Ranked
« This week's game will mark the second time in three seasons (2018) that Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg enter their matchup with both teams ranked in the top 25 in both the AFCA and D3football.com Polls.
« In 2018, the Blue Jays topped the Mules, 27-16, at Homewood Field with Hopkins carrying rankings of 21st (AFCA) and 23rd (D3football.com) into the game.  The Mules entered that matchup ranked 22nd (AFCA) and 18th (D3football.com).
« In 2014 (JHU-12th, Muhlenberg-23rd) and 2016 (JHU-9th, Muhlenberg-24th) both teams were ranked in the top 25 by the AFCA at the time of the game.

Road Warriors
«  This week's game at Muhlenberg is the third in a stretch that will see the Blue Jays play four of five games on the road.
« The Blue Jays played at Juniata (Sept. 18) and at Moravian (Sept. 25), hosted F&M (Oct. 2), play at Muhlenberg (Oct. 15) and then at Gettysburg (Oct. 23) during this five-game stretch.

Before The Bye
«  The game against F&M on Oct. 2 was the last game for the Blue Jays before their bye week.  Including the win against the Diplomats and dating back to 2011, the Blue Jays are 45-3 in games played before their bye.
«  The Centennial Conference went to the league-wide bye in the middle of the season in 2011.

After the Bye
«  Dating back to 2011, when the Centennial Conference went to a league-wide bye in the middle of the season, Johns Hopkins is 40-3 in regular season games played after the bye week.
«  In games played after the bye since 2011, the Blue Jays are 19-2 in regular season games played on the road and 21-1 in regular season games played at home.

Oktoberfest
«  Johns Hopkins flipped the calendar to October for its game against F&M - and the month has been good to the Blue Jays of late.
«  Including the win against the Diplomats, the Blue Jays have won 32 of their last 33 games in the month of October dating back 2010.  The lone loss came in 2019, when F&M topped the Blue Jays, 20-17, at Homewood Field (10-19-19).
«  Ironically, the Blue Jays had been just 10-8 in their previous 18 games in the month of October before jump-starting the current 33-game run with a 49-24 win at Susquehanna (10-23-2010).

Friday Night Lights
«  Dating back to 1982, when the Blue Jays began regularly scheduling games on Friday night, this week's game will be the 58th for Johns Hopkins under the Friday night lights.
« Johns Hopkins is 40-16-1 (.711) on Friday nights, including 36-13-1 (.730) at Homewood Field.
« This week's game will be just the eighth away from Homewood on a Friday night since 1982 with the Jays sporting a 4-3 record in the previous seven.
« Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg are meeting for fifth time on a Friday night with the last meeting coming in 1998.  JHU won each of the previous four with all of those games played at Homewood Field between 1992 and 1998.

JHU Leads the Nation in Scoring
« Johns Hopkins enters this week's game at Muhlenberg as the top scoring team in the nation in all divisions of the NCAA.
« The Blue Jays are currently averaging 59.8 points per game  « JHU is one of just seven Division III teams averaging better than 50 points per game and one of just 10 teams in all divisions averaging better than 50 per outing.

Scoring Notes of Interest
« Johns Hopkins has scored 299 points in its first five games of the 2021 season.  That's the most points JHU has scored in any five-game span in school history.\
« Dating back to the 2019 season, JHU has scored at least 42 points in eight straight games, 49 or more in six straight and 50 or more in six of the last eight.
« In 16 quarters this season, the Blue Jays have scored 10 or more points in 14 of the 20 and 20 or more in seven of 20.
« JHU has scored 108 points in the second quarter and has yet to allow a third-quarter point.

Quite a Run - Part I
« Johns Hopkins was tied with Ursinus at 14-14 with six minutes remaining in the second quarter of its game against the Bears on September 11.
« Since then, over a span of 14 quarters and six minutes, the Blue Jays have outscored the opposition 232-23.

Quite a Run - Part II
« Since allowing touchdowns on two of the first three drives against Ursinus, the Blue Jay defense has been more than just a little stingy.  Consider ...•
« JHU has not allowed a touchdown in 57 consecutive possessions dating back to the second quarter against Ursinus.
« The Blue Jays have allowed just three field goals in the last 57 opponent possessions.  The lone TDs allowed during the last 14 quarters came when Ursinus recovered a fumbled Blue Jay punt in the end zone and F&M blocked a punt that the Diplomats recovered in the end zone for a touchdown.
« The last 57 opponent possessions have ended with 1 safety, 3 field goals, 5 interceptions, 6 fumbles lost, 5 turnovers on downs and 32 punts ... five others ended with the conclusion of either the second or fourth quarter.

Close Calls
«  Since the start of the 2013 season, Johns Hopkins has lost a total of 11 games.  Those 11 losses have come by a total of 56 points with setbacks by five, three, five, seven, four, three, two, eight, one, three and 15 points.  Translation, 10 of Johns Hopkins' 11 losses since the start of the 2013 season have come by a touchdown or less.  The 31-16 loss to Muhlenberg (Nov. 2, 2019) marked the first time JHU had lost a regular season game by more than nine points in more than 10 years (2009 season opener at Delaware Valley).
