BALTIMORE, MD – Fans will have their first chance to check out the 2021-22 Johns Hopkins wrestling team on Saturday, October 30 when head coach
Keith Norris's team hosts its annual inter-squad scrimmage in Goldfarb Gymnasium. Wrestling starts at 7 pm with nine bouts on the schedule, but that is just a small part of the festivities scheduled for the Blue Jays and their fans with much of the evening focused on former Blue Jay Bradlee Hillier LaMontagne.
Renaming the Brawl
For years, the season-opening scrimmage has been dubbed the Black & Blue Brawl. This year, in honor of former teammate Bradlee Hillier LaMontagne, the event has been rebranded "Bradlee's Brawl."
LaMontagne, who would have been a senior on this year's team, died in a boating accident in December 2020. He had been elected to serve as a co-captain of the 2020-21 team after starting at 157 as a freshman and sophomore. LaMontagne was named an NWCA Scholar All-American last year and co-holds the Johns Hopkins single-season record for matches (47).
Renaming the Room
In addition to renaming the team's annual season-opening inter-squad scrimmage, the program launched the Bradlee Hillier LaMontagne Legacy Fund, an endowment to support the most pressing annual programmatic needs, and to name the wrestling room the Bradlee Hillier LaMontagne Wrestling Room.
Through the efforts of supporters of the program, the room will officially be dedicated in his honor in a ceremony at 5:30 pm on Saturday. The ceremony will take place in Goldfarb Gymnasium with tours of the renovated wrestling room and the recently-expanded and renovated Bill Starr Weight Room to follow at 6 pm.
Supporting Youth Wrestling Baltimore City
Norris and his team have been involved with the "Beat the Steets-Baltimore" Wrestling Program for kids in Baltimore City since the organization's inception in 2012.
Beat the Streets-Baltimore partners with Baltimore City Public/Charter Schools to organize after-school wrestling programs. The wrestling programs are used to 'hook' or engage students in the program, school, and mentoring opportunities. The program also develop works to students' personal, academic, and social skills, while also incorporating relevant financial knowledge and skills through engaging, cutting-edge learning experiences.
As part of the Blue Jays' continued support of Beat the Streets, the team is donating a copy of the book titled "
Dino-Wrestling" by Lisa Wheeler in LaMontagne's name to each of the 42 elementary schools in Baltimore City. Throughout his life, Bradlee shared his passion and enthusiasm for wrestling with many people. His teammates and family hope this book inspires others to love the sport of wrestling.
