Hubley Nominated for Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year

Wide Receiver Suffered Broken, Leg, Collarbone on Same Play in 2019

NEW YORK, NY - Johns Hopkins wide receiver Ryan Hubley has been nominated for the 2021 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year it was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors' of America (CoSIDA).  Hubley is the first Johns Hopkins player to be nominated since the award originated in 2018.

Hubley, who is playing this season as a graduate student, was enjoying a standout season in 2019 before suffering a broken right fibula and a broken left collarbone on the same play in the sixth game of the season against Franklin & Marshall.  While he was able to avoid having surgery to repair either injury, his rehabilitation was made more challenging by the fact that he could not put any weight on his injured leg, but could also not use crutches due to sling needed to support his broke collarbone.

Still, he worked through both injuries and has returned to his form of old this season.  Through eight games, the First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American and two-time All-Centennial Conference selection has 52 receptions for 651 yards and three touchdowns.  His efforts this season have boosted his career totals to 205 receptions for 2,380 yards and 14 touchdowns; he ranks sixth in school history in career receptions, ninth in receiving yards and 16th in touchdown receptions.

Ten times during the 2021 college football season, three inspiring student-athletes from all levels of college football who have overcome injury, illness, or other challenges, are recognized as Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Nominees by a panel of writers, editors, and sports information directors from CoSIDA, AP and Touchdown Illustrated. In December, three of the 30 nominees will be chosen as winners of the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award and recognized at a special ceremony during the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2022, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
