SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team closed the pre-Thanksgiving portion of its 2021-22 schedule with a 10
th-place finish at the 14-team Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Jays used three top-five finishes, several other solid showings and a number of bonus-point victories to fuel their showing. The Blue Jays totaled 56.5 team points on the day; with three individual champions, Coast Guard claimed the team title with 162.5 points.
Paul Places Second at 174
Senior
Joe Paul, the number two seed at 174, advanced to the title bout with three wins, including one by technical fall, before falling to top-seeded Marco Gaita of Wesleyan in the finals. He opened his run with an 18-2 tech fall victory over Chris McCarthy of Rhode Island College and followed that with a 10-3 win over Wesleyan's Joe Colon in the quarterfinals. Matched with third-seeded Fox Maxwell of Bridgewater in the semifinals, Paul pulled out a 5-3 win to move into the finals, where he fell to Gaita, 13-4.
Massa Advances to Semifinals, Places Third
Sophomore
Mike Massa earned the number three seed at 197 and advanced the semifinals before slipping into the consolation bracket and eventually placing third. Massa needed less than 90 seconds to win his first two bouts as he scored a 40-second fall against Tim Glynn of Trinity in his opening match and then needed just 32 seconds to pin Chris Cratsley of Messiah in the quarterfinals. He was bounced to the consolation bracket by Western New England's Darby McLaughlin, where he met Keevon Berry of Centenary in the third-place bout. Massa scored the first takedown early in the match and never trailed in a 7-5 win that locked up his third-place finish.
Lorin Wrestles Back to Fifth
Junior
Brent Lorin dropped his first match of the day, but rebounded to win five straight to place fifth. He started his run with a pin, added a major and two more wins by fall to move into the fifth-place match, where he met Coast Guard's third-seeded Brock Laggini. Lorin turned an early takedown into a 35-second fall to grab his fifth-place finish with all five wins earning bonus points in the team standings.
