MANHEIM, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team placed three individuals on the 2021 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-America Team it was recently announced.  The three selections boost Johns Hopkins total to 64 all-time selections since the first Blue Jay landed a spot on the team in 1984.
 
Johns Hopkins representatives on the team were junior Bradlee Lamontagne, sophomore Brent Lorin and senior Joe Paul.  Named a co-captain prior the season, Lamontagne was named posthumously after passing away in December.
 
Due to COVID-19 protocols that kept many conferences and teams sidelined, the Division III Leadership Group was moved to make changes to this year's NWCA awards program.  Most notably, the team component was suspended until next season with recognition going to individuals only.  It was also decided that athletes unable to compete this season would be eligible for nomination and could receive All-America status.
 
Traditionally, the NWCA Scholar All-American listing includes only wrestlers who carry a GPA of at least 3.20 (cumulative or last academic year) and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships, place in the top six at the NCAA qualifier, or win more than 67 percent of matches and wrestle in 50 percent of scheduled dates.
 
Lamontagne was majoring in biology with a minor in computer science.  He posted a 23-24 record at 157 pounds as a sophomore and placed fourth at both the Centennial Conference and NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.  He counted seven pins and nine bonus-point victories to his credit that year and 11 pins and 16 bonus-point wins in his career; his 47 matches as a sophomore are tied for the most in a single-season in school history.
 
Lorin burst on the scene and made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2019-20 at 125 pounds.  He rang up a 20-11 regular-season record before missing the Centennial Conference and NCAA Regional Championships with an injury.  He counted eight pins, two major decisions and one technical fall among his 20 victories and he was 5-1 in Centennial Conference duals.  Lorin is majoring in applied math and statistics and carries a 3.78 cumulative GPA after posting a perfect 4.0 last fall.
 
Paul is making his second consecutive appearance on the NWCA Scholar All-America Team and he is the 17^th wrestler in school history to earn two more selections to the team.  Paul made the rarely-seen jump from 149 pounds to 174 from his freshman to sophomore year and posted a 30-17 record with seven pins and six major decisions to his credit.  He also placed fourth at the Centennial Conference Championships and seventh at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships and his 30 wins are the second-most by a sophomore in school history.  Paul is majoring in international studies with a minor in Spanish; he carries a 3.87 cumulative GPA after posting a 4.0 last fall as well.
