Devireddy, Bader Advance to ITA Southeast Quarterfinals

| Box Score 3 FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins junior Anjali Devireddy and sophomore Ali Bader made a run to the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Championship Singles Draw this past weekend at the University of Mary Washington.

In addition, Devireddy and senior Evelyn Chang advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship doubles draw. Bader and junior Christina Huynh advanced to the round of 16 in doubles.

"I couldn't have asked for a bigger effort from our ladies this weekend," said head coach Dan Pollock.  "They prepared well, acted professionally, and competed hard over the two days.  We knew going in there would be some rust to shake off and some nerves to overcome after such a long layoff for a few of them, and playing this level of competition can only help in those areas.  We also learned some valuable lessons about ourselves, what it takes to overcome adversity on the court, and areas that we need to work on moving forwards to make the jump to where we want to be.  We're looking forward to getting back on the practice court and continuing to improve."

Devireddy, seeded eighth, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mary Washington's Amanda Hagino. She then beat Irene Meng of Washington College 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16. Devireddy came from behind to beat Carnegie Mellon's Ava Givone 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 to earn a berth in the quarterfinals. There she lost to ninth-seeded Ruth de Souza of Sweet Briar 6-2, 7-5. Her run to the quarterfinals was her best finish at the ITA Regional.

Bader, playing in her first ITA Southeast Championship, kicked off the weekend with a sweep of Mary Washington's Emily Beckner. She then defeated Martine Fierro of Dickinson 6-4, 6-2. In the round of 16, Bader beat third-seeded Taylor Garcia of Washington & Lee 7-5, 6-0. Her run ended in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion, ninth-seeded Crystal Zhou of Carnegie Mellon 6-2, 6-1.
Chang dropped her opening round to ninth-seeded Gabi Moss of Washington & Lee 6-0, 6-0. She rebounded with a great 8-6 win over Beckner in the consolation bracket. Huynh lost a tough first-round match to ninth-seeded Megan Qiang of Carnegie Mellon 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. She also rebounded nicely with an 8-3 win over Alex Brewster of Virginia Wesleyan in the consolation.

In the doubles draw, Devireddy and Chang were seeded fifth and opened with an 8-6 win over Mimi Lavin and Lisette Pham of Haverford. The duo then defeated Qiang and Sarah Yang 8-1 to move onto the quarterfinals. Their run ended with a hard-fought 8-7 (5) loss to Natalia Garcia Molina and Jahveesha Combs of Shenandoah.

Bader and Huynh had a tough first round match, facing off against top-seeded and All-American duo Lindy Cornwall and Bin Zheng, 8-2. The Tartan duo went on to win the championship. In the consolation draw, the Blue Jay pair dropped a tough 8-7 (2) decision to Kaitlyn Chalker and Marta Mikos of Washington & Lee.
