Meet Information
• Meet: NYC Gotham Cup
• Location: Ocean Breeze | Staten Island, NY
• Date: Friday, January 21st
Matt Kleiman led a strong Blue Jay performance on Friday in Staten Island as the Jays got multiple performances worthy of mention in the JHU record books. Coach Van Allen added, "Really pumped about the energy today across the board. We certainly know we're in a good position to hit our team goals moving forward. We continue to move the standards of our team expectations upwards, and the guys did that today. Matt was remarkable, but that really was attributed to such a strong practice dynamic we get every workout out of those guys. We still have a lot of work to do, but really confident about the progress we've made the direction we're going."
Meet Highlights
- Hopkins was back in action today at the Gotham Cup in Staten Island, NY. Leading the way today was Kleiman, who took down former National Champion Andrew Carey's school record in the mile run with a time of 4:09.45, the first sub 4:10 mile time in d3 this year. Kleiman was sitting in fourth place at the 800m mark with a time of 2:07 before starting to make his move. Kleiman would drop a blistering 59.26 over the last 400m to eclipse the 4:10 barrier. Just behind him was teammate Arthur Beyer in fourth and Daniel Chen in eighth who would run 4:14.22 and 4:17.59 respectively to all put themselves in striking range of NCAA qualifying marks.
- Two-sport athlete, Garrett Brophy, had a monstrous day in the men's shot put, eclipsing his previous best by over half a meter, throwing 14.11m to take fifth place. Brophy's mark breaks his own freshman record set earlier this season.
- The most dominant team performance by the Jays came in the men's 3k with 4 finishers in the top 7, all with career best marks. In a back-and-forth race with a quartet of Siena runners, it looked more like a dual meet in cross country than a large track invitational. The lead would change hands a dozen different times before Gavin McElhennon took the lead with 800m to go. McElhennon would go on to run 8:34.79 for the win, while Bryce Thalheimer would place 2nd in a PR time of 8:37.46. Charlie Teeter, despite promising to Coach Van Allen he would run 8:39.9 and not 8:40, broke that promise but indeed did notch a PR and sixth place finish with a time of 8:40.33. Sean Enright would round out the quartet with a time of 8:42.43.

- Justin Canedy placed seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.89m
- Peter Lim finished in 10th place in the pole vault with a leap of 3.95m
- Kevin Sommer takes 14th place in the 400m with a time of 51.52.
