Johns Hopkins-Susquehanna Game Notes

Blue Jays, River Hawks Meet in Showdown of Unbeatens

The Game
«  Johns Hopkins (7-0, 6-0 CC) plays the first of two straight games on the road in Pennsylvania as the Blue Jays travel to Susquehanna to take on the River Hawks (7-0, 6-0 CC).

A Look Back
«  Johns Hopkins set up this week's Centennial Conference matchup of unbeatens with a 60-7 win over Gettysburg at Homewood Field last Saturday.
« The River Hawks did their part to set up the this week's matchup as they eased past McDaniel, 58-0, on the road last Saturday.

The Facts
«  This is the 137th season of Johns Hopkins football.  JHU first fielded a team in 1882.
«  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 581-488-57 (.541).
«  Since the start of the 2010 season, the Blue Jays are 117-19 (.860) overall and 96-9 (.914) in the Centennial Conference.
«  Overall, JHU owns 15 Centennial Conference titles (all won since 2002) and has qualified for the NCAA Playoffs 11 times (all since 2005).

Poll Position
«  Johns Hopkins inched up a spot in both of the Division III football polls this week as the Blue Jays are ranked sixth in the AFCA Poll and seventh in the D3football.com.
«  The number six ranking from the AFCA matches the Blue Jays' highest in-season ranking in that poll's history.  JHU was ranked sixth for one week in 2014 and two weeks in 2015.  The highest overall AFCA ranking for JHU is fifth, which came in the final poll of the 2018 season.
«  Including this week's polls, Johns Hopkins has been ranked in the top 10 in the AFCA Poll 47 times, while the current nine-week run in the top 10 in the D3football.com Poll gives the Blue Jays 36 all-time top-10 rankings in that poll.

Oktoberfest
«  Johns Hopkins flipped the calendar to October for its game against F&M on October 1 ... and the month has been good to the Blue Jays of late.
«  Including last week's win against Gettysburg, the Blue Jays have won 37 of their last 39 games in the month of October dating back to 2010.
«  Ironically, the Blue Jays had been just 10-8 in their previous 18 games in the month of October before jump-starting the current 39-game run with a 49-24 win at Susquehanna (10-23-2010).

The Race for the Boot
«  The Centennial Conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs.  In the case of co-champions, a tie-breaking procedure is in place to determine which team will earn the automatic bid.
«  There are still several scenarios that can play out with three games remaining in the regular season.  Below is a glance at the simplest possibility for each team that can still get a share of the conference title and/or the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs.

Johns Hopkins: The Blue Jays grab the outright conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs with three wins.  Two wins, as long as one of them is against Susquehanna, assures the Blue Jays of at least a share of the title and gives them the automatic bid as well.

Susquehanna: The River Hawks grab the outright conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs with three wins.  Two wins, as long as one of them is against Johns Hopkins, assures the River Hawks of at least a share of the title and gives them the automatic bid as well.

Muhlenberg:  Three Muhlenberg wins coupled with two losses by both Johns Hopkins & Susquehanna would give Muhlenberg a share of the title.  With a game remaining against Susquehanna, there is still a path to the automatic bid for the Mules.

Ursinus:  Three Ursinus wins coupled with two losses by both Johns Hopkins & Susquehanna would give the Bears a share of the title.  With losses to both JHU and Susquehanna already, the path to the automatic bid is slim.

Centennial Streaking
«  Johns Hopkins will carry a 10-game Centennial Conference winning streak into this week's game against Gettysburg.
« The 10-game CC winning streak is the third-longest in school history.  JHU won a CC-record 40 consecutive league games from 2012-17 and had a 20-game run from 2010-12.
« Including the current streak by the Blue Jays, there have been just nine Centennial Conference winning streaks of 10 games or longer since the league was formed in 1983.  Johns Hopkins owns the longest and third-longest streaks in league history.

Jays Fifth in Scoring, Sixth in Total Offense
«  Through seven games, Johns Hopkins is averaging 50.1 points and 531.4 yards of total offense.
« The Blue Jays currently rank fifth in the nation in scoring offense and sixth in total offense.  In addition, Johns Hopkins is currently one of just four teams in the nation averaging more than 50 points and 500 yards per game (North Central, Mount Union, Cortland St.).

A Fraternity of One
«  Johns Hopkins features one of the most balanced offensive units in the nation as the Blue Jays are averaging 249.1 yards per game rushing and 289.3 yards per game passing.
« Through games of October 22, Johns Hopkins is the only team in the nation averaging more than 245 yards rushing and 285 yards passing.

Rush Defense Among Nation's Best
«  The Johns Hopkins defense held Muhlenberg to 77 rushing yards in the recent 34-27 victory over the Mules and followed that up by allowing just 67 against Gettysburg.
«  Through seven games, the Blue Jays are allowing an average of just 68.7 yards per game on the ground to rank first in the Centennial Conference and 21st in the nation.
« The Blue Jays have held five straight opponents to less than 80 yards rushing and have allowed a total of just 230 rushing yards over that span.
« Dating back to the start of the 2021 season (a span of 19 games), JHU has held the opposition to less than 80 yards rushing 12 times and less than 85 yards 13 times.

Schuermann Sets School Record
«  Johns Hopkins junior Luke Schuermann set a school record with six sacks in the win at F&M on October 1.  The previous record of five had been held by Dave Goldman since 1987, when he notched five in a 19-6 win over Saint Peter's.
« Schuermann's six sacks also tied the Centennial Conference single-game record and he is the only player in the nation (at any NCAA school) with a six-sack game this season.
« Entering this week's game against Gettysburg, Schuermann is tied for third in the nation (Division III) in sacks per game (1.50) and is tied for seventh in tackles for loss per game (2.30).

5,000 ... and 50
«  Johns Hopkins quarterback Ryan Stevens threw for 346 yards in the win at F&M (Oct.1) and in the process ran his career passing total to 5,173 yards, a total he has since bumped to 5,573.
« Stevens eclipsed the 5,000-yard mark in his 20th career game to break David Tammaro's record for reaching 5,000 the fastest (21 games).  For the record, both Stevens and Tammaro reached the mark in their 17th career start as Tammaro (4 games) and Stevens (3) saw limited time as freshmen.
« With two TD passes against Muhlenberg, Stevens also inched past former Blue Jay quarterback and head coach Jim Margraff for fourth place in school history in career touchdown passes - with five last week against Gettysburg, he now has 56 in his career.
« Stevens was named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week after the win against Muhlenberg as he was 25-of-36 for 139 yards with two TDs and one INT and also rushed for a career-high 80 yards and one score in the victory.
« On the year, Stevens is 152-of-214 (.710) for 1,652 yards with 23 TDs against just four INTs.  He ranks fifth in the nation in TD passes.

Wolf Into Top 5, Top 20
«  Senior running back Danny Wolf rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns against Muhlenberg to boost his season totals to 501 yards (125.3/game) and six touchdowns in four games (he has missed games against Juniata, Moravian and Gettysburg).
« His efforts thus far in 2022 push his career totals 1,605 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns on just 277 career carries.
« Wolf is now in sole possession of fourth place on JHU's career rushing touchdowns list and ranks 20th in career rushing yards.

Revere Ties Single-Game TDs Record
«  Wide receiver Quinn Revere rang up eight catches for 123 yards and four touchdown receptions - all in the first half - against Gettysburg last week.  For his efforts, he was named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
« The four TD receptions tied the Johns Hopkins single-game record and mark just the third time a JHU player has had four TD catches in one game.  College Football Hall of Famer Bill Stromberg had four against Georgetown in 1980, while Sam Wernick had four in a win at Susquehanna in 2010.
« Revere ran his 18-game career totals to 109 receptions for 1,554 yards and 22 touchdowns with his showing against Gettysburg.  He ranks 16th in school history in receptions, 17th in receiving yards and tied for seventh in TD receptions.

It's Been a While
«  The Johns Hopkins defense posted its second consecutive shutout with the 54-0 victory over Moravian (Sept. 23).  This came one week after topping Juniata 70-0 to give the Blue Jays back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2008.
« JHU held Juniata to just 123 yards of total offense and limited Moravian to just 106.  This marked the first time the Blue Jays have held consecutive opponents under 200 yards of total offense since a three-game run early in the 2012 season.
«  In the recent win against Juniata, the Blue Jays held the Eagles to -14 rushing yards.  The last time Hopkins had held a team to negative rushing yards was on November 7, 2009, when the Blue Jays held F&M to -20 in a 51-13 victory.

200 ... and 10
«  Nick Seidel, Johns Hopkins' career active leader in tackles, has been credited with 26 tackles through seven games.  He recorded the 200th tackle of his career in the win against Muhlenberg on the same night he added his 10th career interception.  He is now tied for 11th in school history in career interceptions with his 10.
« Seidel is the first Johns Hopkins player to reach 200 career tackles and 10 career interceptions since Matt Campbell rang up 256 tackles and 16 interceptions from 2001-04.

Close Calls
«  Since the start of the 2013 season, Johns Hopkins has lost a total of 13 games.  Those 13 losses have come by a total of 81 points with setbacks by five, three, five, seven, four, three, two, eight, one, three, 15 (twice) and 10 points.  Translation, 11 of Johns Hopkins' 13 losses since the start of the 2013 season have come by a touchdown or less.

On a Roll
«  Johns Hopkins is 104-7 in its last 111 regular season games dating back to late in the 2010 season.
«  The Blue Jays are 114-16 in their last 130 games overall since late in the 2010 season.
«  Dating back farther, Johns Hopkins is 180-44 (.804) since the start of the 2002 season, 186-47 (.798) since the start of the 2001 season and 191-52 (.786) since the start of the 2000 season.
